Georgene's Story
Studied Journalism at SGHS and majored in Communications on a scholarship at the University of Southern California (USC), graduating in 1969. Spent most of my 25 year career working on business and consumer publications within the stables of Fairchild Pubications, Capital Cities/ABC, and Disney. Some titles included Footwear News, Women's Wear Daily, W Magazine, Supermarket News, Technology & Operations, Scene Magazine, and Exposure. I started out as a journalist, became an editor and then switched to the business side selling advertising, managing sales staffs, starting trade shows and traveling the world giving lectures on marketing. I met my husband, James LaBarba, on an interview. We've been married 40 years, no children. In 1991 we bought a tear down house and began designing and building a dream house, moving in in 1997. Now we are in the process of contemplating a smaller footprint and will likely move into a smaller residence in the next few years.
Along the way, I've served on the Board of Directors of The Palos Verdes Art Center and The Honourable Company of Cordwainers. The latter is an organization dedicated to preserving the art of crafting hand made footwear. After retiring from corporate life in l996, I developed the skills of a custom shoemaker and started a web-based business selling shoemaking supplies to other shoemakers world wide.
