Gerald's Story

Hello Everyone! Updated July 15, 2013: I will try to be as brief as possible. One year after Lincoln I joined the Air Force for six years. I did mostly accounting and government real-estate record keeping work. I was stationed six-months in Texas, two-years in New Mexico, three-years in England, and then a half-year in northern California. My travels included a half-dozen countries in Europe. I earned an AAS military degree. After discharge from the military, I came back to East Los and fooled around until I was hired by the Southern California Rapid Transit District as a bus driver. I really only intended to work one summer there but it became my career. For a number of years, my older brother Robert and myself worked at the same bus yard on Margeno street next to the junk yards. I got married and divorced during the next five years at SCRTD. My 16 year-old son, James, is currently the lead trumpet player for the Garden Grove H.S. Marching Band. As all parents feel about their children, I am so proud of him. Well would you believe that after 24 years of bus driving throughout Los Angeles County system, I took early retirement in early 2010. The last year at LACMTA had me working on the 252 route, nicknamed 'the Heights Shuttle', which serviced Lincoln High Students in the afternoon. In my opinion, Lincoln's students are much better behaved than my experiences with some of Wilson's 'let's rush the front door pass the bus driver without paying students.' ty, it seems, had brought my life came back full-circle to LIncoln High. At present in July of 2013, I am currently five classes short of my undergraduate in public administration major with a minor in business and graduation should be June 2014. In the summer of 2012, I traveled to Cuba for a couple of weeks with other university students to do political studies for class papers and presentations afterwards. Trust me on this, some neighborhoods in Havana make Lincoln Heights look like Beverly Hills. Lately, my mentor professor, Mark Peterson, encourages me to apply for graduate school at Wichita State University to study public finance. I plan on pursuing my second career in government-related work as soon as possible. For those who are comtemplating grad school, loan debt is a primary concern before makiing that commitment. During my years at Lincoln, there were many great educators but Mr. Art Duardo was my favorite. He was the hardest-working music teacher ever. I am not surprised to learn that he was eventually promoted to a principal's position some years later at L.A. Unified. I have lots of good memories of fellow students, the tiger band, and all those free lunches I enjoyed (our family was low income). It sounds silly in retrospect, but "Tiger Pride" is still a part of me. I wish everybody the best of love and happiness as we venture together on this virtual ride called life.God's Blessings to all. ======= Gerald "Jerry" Bingham; Lincoln Tiger; 1975 to 1978
