Gerald's Story
Life
Where to start...
Hmmmm... Well, right out of high-school I began attending the University of Idaho where I majored in Zoology. I opted for the 5 year program (the student-loan people are still thanking me.) and ended up with B.S. degrees in Zoology, Biology, and Botany which, as you'll see later, really didn't do much for me. While in College, I met the woman who would become my wife in '94 (unfortunately this didn't work out... read on.), made some good friends, took a couple of summer jobs working with commercial divers, and generally learned a lot about how biological things tick.
Afterwards, I moved to Seattle for a while to attempt to get into the Oceanography Graduate program at UW, which failed miserably (They only took 4 out of over 400 candidates!!!). Fearing I would never be gainfully employed, I moved back to Boise to sulk, where I was promptly snatched up by Adecco to do Printer Testing at HP. That raised my spirits enough to move back to Seattle with my new-found career track where I've lived (off and on) ever since.
I currently reside in Seattle with my son Daniel and his pooch Rufus. I finally convinced my brother to give up his Idaho citizenship and move up here permanently and he now resides in Kirkland. As usual, I'm pining away for some warmer/drier days so I can break out my motorcycle and get out on the open road. Every time I pass by that thing sitting all alone in the carport I get a tear in my eye... *sniff*

up on the good old days or are just looking for something fun to do and happen to be in the Seattle area!
School
My school bio isn't really interesting. Right after high-school I attended the University of Idaho for 5 years where I obtained BS degrees in Biology, Botany, and Zoology. Unfortunately jobs are few and far between for people with that kind of background so I am now working in the IT industry in Quality Assurance. I'm continuing my education with classes in Object Oriented Design and Java Programming in the hopes that I don't render myself completely obsolete.
College
As they said in Southpark, "There's a time and a place for everything, and that place is College!"
I can't agree more... I think for most people, college is one of the best times of their lives. It certainly was for me. I made a lot of wonderful friends during my 5 years there and learned a lot about myself.
Though I can't say that my major really applied to what I ended up doing as a career, it certainly provided me with the skills to get there. I think the real purpose of higher education is to teach people how to be resourceful and adaptable more than anything else. Once you have those basic tools it really doesn't matter which field you go into.
Workplace
After 7 long and very interesting years at Classmates, I finally moved on to bigger and better things! I'm now an Engineering Manager/Scrum Master at Cisco, working with another really great group of people and being educated via fire-hose.
