Gerald's Story

After BCH and a Navy-sponsored engineering degree at Marquette, I spent 4 years as a Navy officer in destroyers seeing a lot of the world and 2 more years on shore duty. Along the way I acquired a wife and a daughter, so returned to civilian life rather than go back to sea. Have lived in the Baltimore/Washington area ever since and am now retired from working for the Navy as a civilian contractor. Have 3 grown daughters, 2 sons-in-law and 4 grandchildren. But after almost 30 years married found myself single again 20 years ago. A few years ago moved from the suburbs to a downtown home overlook...Expand for more
ing Baltimore Harbor and Fort McHenry. Complete new lifestyle for a kid from Beloit. In our spare time Mary Jane and I find interesting places to travel. Recent forays include Egypt, Morocco, Gibraltar and Portugal. For 22 years I've volunteered as a living history interpreter with the National Park Service at Fort McHenry National Monument. Many summer weekends I'm a sailor defending Baltimore during the 1814 British attack and inspiring Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner. I enjoy greeting and sharing the story with visitors from all over the world. Stop in and say hello.

This is the big reason I've stayed involved so long. The Fort has a great story to tell. I enjoy sharing it and visitors want to hear it.
The Taj Mahal is not over rated. Spectacular!
