Gerald's Story
After high school I majored in Communication at John Carroll University and graduated there in 1976. I earned my master's in journalism at The Ohio State University in 1977.
My first professional job was with the Lake County News-Herald as a reporter. After three years I became assistant city editor, mainly editing stories and working with the reporters. In the late 1970s I also started teaching journalism part time at John Carroll University.
From 1982-87 I was back in graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, majoring in mass communication research. I got my Ph.D. in 1987, and started teaching at Ohio State University School of Journalism in autumn 1987.
At Wisconsin I studied quantitative social science research methods and the application of them to the study of politics, media and public opinion.

d media effects, mainly focusing on ways that people think about public issues and the ways these can be framed.
In the late 1990s I started working with the OSU Center for Survey Research and became co-investigator on a large ongoing polling project for the Columbus Dispatch and WBNS-TV 10. We called this project the Buckeye State Poll. In 2000 I became the main investigator on that project and in 2001 Faculty Director of the OSU Center for Survey Research. I was director of that center until it closed in 2004 when I returned to the School of Communication as a full time faculty member.
I teach now courses such as Public Opinion and Communication, Civic Journalism, Media and Terrorism, and Survey Research.
My spouse, Li Tang, has a doctorate in Education. We live in Dublin, OH.
