Gerald's Story
After graduation from Melvindale H S, I joined the Army to avoid the draft. After spending 6 months as an aircraft mechanic, I was accepted to the Warrant Officer Helicopter Flight School and graduated in July of 65 just in time for Johnson's build-up in Vietnam.
I left Ft Benning with the 1st Air Cavalry Division landing at Cam Ranh Bay in August. In November, I participated in the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley, the first airmobile operation that pitted helicopters against Viet Cong Regulars. If you saw the movie "We Were Solders" staring Mel Gibson, that depicted the battle.
I spent nine months with the Cav in the central highlands before being transferred to the 48th Aviation Battalion based out of Phan Rhang. I flew mostly Huey lift ships all though they tried to put me in gun ships when I first arrived do to my size (only 125 pounds). I took many hits flying combat missions but that Huey brought me home most of the time. I was shot down three times and got banged up a bit but nothing serious. I consider myself quite lucky for not incurring any serious injuries while in Nam. I lost many good friends over there. I could of had a few "Kerry" Purple Hearts but I ...Expand for more
could never accept such an award for just a few scratches.
There is a good book about the helicopter war and the pilots that flew them called "Chickenhawk." It was written by a friend of mine that I flew with while in Nam. My name in the book is Gary Resler. The new addition has pictures with our real names. You might get a kick out of his web site: robertcmason.com. My name in some of the pictures is Resler.
When I left Nam I was sent to Nuremberg, Germany for my last two years of service. It turned out to be a great assignment, flying the East German and Czechoslovakian border. I became the Division Standardization Pilot in charge of training all new boarder pilots assigned to the 2nd Armour Cav. That kept me from going back to Nam.
Upon leaving the service in 1968, I continued my flying career flying both jets and helicopters as a corporate pilot for another 34 years until retiring in 2002. Now I fly the B-25 bomber for the Yankee Air Force during the summer months strictly for my own enjoyment.
Today I enjoy life with my beautiful wife Martie,of 47 years,(Class of 63)my two sons and my four grandchildren.
Hope to hear from old classmates. Take care, Jerry
