Gerald's Story
Life
Attended Greenfield Elementry till second grade. Then transferrred to Standard School. Got put back a year, ending up repeating second grade. Always felt bad about it, but realize now it was best for me! In 7th and 8th grade played Flag Football, Junior Optimist Basketball, and Baseball. Tried out for band playing the Cornet, but ended up quiting, because I didn't like the band teacher!!! One of the distasteful things about graduating from Standard was having to go through graduation certimonies with a nasty looking boil on my face.
I went to North High for a semester during my freshman year and then transferred to Bakersfield High. I played freshman football at North High and thought I would play at Bakersfield High, but Paul Briggs the coach at the time I didn't like, so I went out for Cross-Country and Track and have been an avid jogger all my life pretty much. Had a good Cross-Country coach Mr. Beerline (that the name I remember) and a great track coach whom I don't remember. In my Junior and Senior year I went to work part time for the Californian as a proof deliver.
At BHS I met & and eventually married my High School sweetheart Virginia M Lawson to whom I have been married over 54 years. I joined the Navy after High School and after 4 years got a Navy Civil Service job for the next 37 years. MY specialty was missiles, computers, automated test equipment, software & hardware design, program management, and missile support equipment. Overall I had a great career, but the last 5 years were h...Expand for more
ell!!! I retired January 1, 2005 and have been busy ever since. Virginia retired from the Ventura Unified School District after 30 years in December 2008.
We have two grown children Gary 49 with his wife Wendy from Texas and MIchelle 47 with her husband Lorne, and our three grandchildren Lornie (19), and paternal twins (16) Lindsey & Rachel. Gary is a Civil Engineer with the County of Ventura and Michelle is a kindergarten teacher in the Ventura Unfied School District. I stay busy with my grandchildren providing logistical support with babysitting, transpertation, and doing house husband duties and other handyman chores, etc. The only thing I miss about working is the money, because I did make really good money working as a Civil Servant.
By the grace of God my life has been what it is. I am an honest, loving person, whose family, and Lord are most important. I haven't always been the best Christian and I am not a far out right winger, nor have I always been the best example, but I try to follow my Lord Jesus the best I can and hope others will find the path to belief and Lordship Of Christ in their lives. Following Christ is an individual decision!
College
I really only attended Ventura College off and on. I took many supervsion classes to help with advancement in my job at Point Mugu with the Navy. One of the greatest educational experiences I ever had was attending the Naval Management College at the Naval War College in Monterey, California. It was one of my highlights of my Civil Service Career.
