Gerard's Story

Life Hello! After leaving Stuyvesant, I attended Yale as an undergraduate and Stanford University for medical school. I completed my residency training in 1988, and spent nine years in private practice in northern California, during which time I also served as a Clinical Instructor in the residency program at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. In 1998, I accepted a full-time faculty position at the Duke University School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. There, I served as the Director of Medical Education and Clinical Clerkship Director from 1998 through 2003. I also served as the Residency Program Coordinator from 2000 through 2003. In 2001, I was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. Since April 2004, I have served as a medical officer at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the Office of New Drugs at the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research in Rockville, MD. In that position, I was involved in evaluating the treatment risks and risk management plans for medications used by pregnant women. I also continued to teach and mentor physicians-in-training as an adjunct Associate Professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Since 2006, I have been Director of U.S. Medical Affairs for Women's Healthcare for Berlex (now Bayer) in Wayne, NJ. My professional interests have varied from basic and applied research, to clinical research, to the development of innovative surgical techniques, to medical education. My initial training was in chemical engineering, and I worked with the team at Yale University that developed and evaluated the outer hull thermal protection system for NASA’s Space Shuttle. Thereafter, I worked in industry during a period when the U.S. was interested in promoting the development of technologies to attain self-sufficiency in critical natural resources. There, I directed a division that was funded both by the National Science Foundation and the Bureau of Mines to develop i...Expand for more

After successful completion of that project, I was involved in an EPA-funded effort to separate chromium from electroplating waste water effluents. Subsequently, I attended medical school at Stanford, where I was a member of the Medical Scholars Training Program. In addition to my medical school training, I spent several years under the tutelage of members of the Stanford faculty in neuroscience, learning innovative techniques for basic cellular-level research in the biological sciences. Since completing my residency training in 1988, I have presented 32 scientific papers at 22 professional meetings, and I have published 38 peer-reviewed scientific articles and chapters. In 2000, I was awarded a Special Research Project grant from District IV of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to continue portions of my work on the evaluation of normal and abnormal rates of fetal growth. In 2002, I was awarded the 1st Prize as the faculty mentor for the best Ob-Gyn resident research paper at the Duke University Medical Center, as well as 2nd Prize for the best clinical research paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. In 2004, I was granted a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office encompassing techniques that involve methods, systems, and computer program products for the antenatal estimation of fetal weight and the risk of fetal macrosomia. I have also had an interest in minimally invasive endoscopic surgery and was certified in 1996 in both advanced operative laparoscopy and hysteroscopy by the Accreditation Council for Gynecologic Endoscopists. In 2006, I was issued a special citation by FDA. In addition, I have had interests in both hormonal contraceptives and post-menopausal hormone therapy, and have served as an advisor as well as a speaker for multiple pharmaceutical companies.
