Gery's Story
Life
Gery L. Deer ....Greeneview HS Class of 1985
Gery L. Deer attended Wright State University, Sinclair College and Ohio University studying engineering, computer science, and communications. In 1990, Gery began teaching non-combative whip artistry in one-on-one sessions at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
In early 1992, Gery worked with whip arts students in martial and performing arts at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
Since then, Gery has worked with countless actors, stunt performers, musicians, television and movie personalities, hobbyists, and an array of local entertainers.
In 2003 Gery's specialized whip holstering equipment was used in the Universal Film "The Rundown," with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. He had designed the holsters in early 1990 and the studio's property manager, Doug Fox, wanted to use them in the movie because of their modern look and functionality. Gery...Expand for more
also managed to get work for his friend, maker Paul Nolan, who made 12 whips used in the film and as training equipment for the actors.
In the spring of 2006 he was named International Advisor on the Whip by the World Stunt Association. His writings on the whip arts have been featured in such publications as the Wild West Performing Arts FoundationÂs Ropelines magazine and the Single Action Shooting SocietyÂs Cowboy Chronicle. Gery's whip work has been featured on several national television programs including "Steve Harvey's Big Time Challenge," NBC's "America's Got Talent," and "The Bonnie Hunt Show."
Gery's first career is in science and communications. He is a well known self-syndicated columnist, speaker, writer, and publicist. His writing is featured in a number of regional and national publications.
