Gilbert's Story
After I graduated in 1990, I finished up my Army AIT, signed up for active duty and deployed to Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm with the 101st Airborne Division. After I came back, I lived at Ft Campbell until 1996 when I was sent to Korea for a year. In 1997, I was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division in Ft Drum, New York. I worked as a Pre-Ranger Instructor, then Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, and Platoon Leader while I was there. In late 2000, I was reassigned as a Drill Sergeant in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. I worked there until I was reassigned in 2002 to the 4th Infantry Division in Ft Hood, TX. While I was stationed there, I deployed to Tikrit, Iraq in 2003 for a year (you can read that story if you want in "We Got Him! A Memoir of the Hunt and Capture of Saddam Hussein" by Steve Russell) where I worked primarily supervising a Personal Security Detachment for LTC Steve Russell (Senator for Oklahoma's 45th District). I Deployed again in 2005 to the Baghdad area for another year. While I was there, I ran a Detainee Facility for the Baghdad area, worked as a Platoon Sergeant, and as an Adviser for the 3rd Brigade, 6th Iraqi Infa...Expand for more
ntry Division. Shortly after I returned from Iraq, I was reassigned to Camp Frank Merrill in Dahlonega Georgia to work as a Ranger Instructor for the U.S. Army Ranger School Mountain Phase. I had expected to remain there until retirement, but the Army had other plans for me. In February, 2009, they promoted me and then sent me on one more deployment. I was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division as the NCOIC of a Military Transition Team. Our 12 man team deployed to the Baghdad area for a year and we were Advisers for the 17th Iraqi Army Division. I came home in late 2010 and processed out of the army, retiring on February 1st, 2011. I was unemployed for a whole 23 days, then I went to work for MPRI, part of L3, as a Mentor for the Afghan Special Operations Command near Kabul, Afghanistan.
I now have 4 children, 2 step-daughters, 2 ex-wives, and am currently married (3rd time is a charm). My house, wife, 2 step-daughters, and one of my sons are in North Georgia. My oldest son has joined the Navy as a Corpsman and will be stationed in San Diego after he finishes the rest of his medical training. Eventually, I plan to move back to South-east Oklahoma.
