Gina's Story

Life Living in North Idaho, married since 1981 to my husband, Tom. We have 3 children - his two that I've raised and our son, Jonathan, born in May 1986. I do everything and anything that has to do with computers for the County Library District here. Official title is Technology Manager. I also do freelance web and graphic design and manage several IT systems in the community as a consultant. I've worked with computers since 1983 in one form or another. I owned a PC sales, service, & support business for several years until the library offered me a dream position in 1994, at which time I sold my business and joined the library district. My hobbies include travel, golf, fitness and nutrition, reading, writing, and technology. My husband has worked for FedEx since 1987 and is a former junior high Biology & PE teacher and football and basketball coach. He is a Colorado native. I miss the California sunshine, the ocean, and family and friends still there, but not much else. I have 4 grandkids; two live here in town, the other two live just over an hour away. They are great kids and being a grandparent is a great gig! Well, I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be living in North Idaho! But I am and I love it (miss the ocean and sunshine of California though). I love my job (technology manager for the county library district), have a great family, and really couldn't ask for much more. I didn't really know where I'd be at this point in my life, and in some ways I'm doing exactly what I might have envisioned. In other ways, I could never have imagined my life as it is now. During my senior year of high school, I had many scholarship offers. I was courted by, and accepted into Occidental College with a full ride. My mother decided I was too young to go away to school, having turned 17 just before graduation, so I went to Hancock Jr. College for one year. Met my first husband there and like a dumb kid, decided I didn't want to go to school so far away from him, so I gave up my scholarship and went to UCSB instead. I majored in Electrical Engineering, with an emphasis on software (that was the dark ages - keypunch era). It was not what I thought it would be, so I switched to Art, hoping to study graphic design. ecember of my senior year of college. I stayed in school until March, but finally took a leave of absence with only one quarter left in order to get my BA. Life got crazy, I got divorced, moved to San Francisco, remarried, and never went back to school to get my degree - one of my biggest regrets. I worked for an advertising agency in San Francisco on the California Milk Advisory Board and Pendleton Mills campaigns for a time. Then moved to San Antonio, TX for 7 long months while my husband received his medic training in the Army. From there, we moved to Colorado Springs, CO. I started my own advertising agency, then worked as the in-house ad agency for a local stereo store. I divorced in 1980, met my current husband, and married him in 1981. In 1983, we moved to Sandpoint, ID, where we've lived ever since. Workplace I started working at 15 selling shoes at Reeve's Shoes in the strip mall near the high school. I worked there until I graduated from high school, then did a stint at KFC and a men's clothing store during my first year of college. I started waiting tables in Santa Barbara while I went to UCSB, then worked for an orthopedic supply company in my first office job as the office manager right after school. I had a side job at the San Ysidro Guest Ranch taking people on trail rides, which was an awesome job! In 1977 I moved to San Francisco and worked a variety of jobs while there. I lived in San Antonio, TX while my husband was in AIT at Ft. Sam Houston and worked as a waitress again during our 7 months there. From TX we moved to Colorado Springs, CO. I worked as a cocktail waitress for a bit, then managed a stereo store and worked as their in-house ad agency. After that, I worked in radio advertising sales. I moved to Idaho in 1983, where I became an executive secretary for the president of a skiwear manufacturer. I also put together their catalog and promotional materials, drew line art for the catalog, and was their fit model. After Serac, I became the customer service manager and IT manager of another skiwear manufacturer, Sun Ice USA. Finally, I started my own business, which I owned for 4 years before being hired by the library district in Bonner County as the Technology Manager in 1994, a position I still hold today.
