Gina's Story

Life So much water has passed under the bridge since I left High School! And most of it too boring to bother with. After College Park I spent 4 years doing a 2 year degree at DVC (in chemistry). I then moved up to Seattle to the UW to do Pharmacy. I realized after one term that I really wasn't interested in being a pharmacist but carried on anyway because I really liked the city and I figured it might come in useful someday. I developed an interest in both pharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics and decided to do a graduate course somewhere, in something (anything to avoid pharmacy). Meanwhile, I had met Terry, a post-doc from England, at the UW and we sort of started a relationship. I got accepted to do a PhD at Madison Wisconsin and moved there leaving Terry behind in Seattle. I liked Madison nearly as much as Seattle (though the football team was rather more disappointing) and I think I could be very happy there except for two things. I was missing Terry and I decided I was a bit short in the brains department to undertake a PhD. I returned to Seattle. Terry and I got married (that is a story in itself) and moved to Scotland in 1984, where Terry had a job waiting for him. I naively thought that living in the UK would be much the same as some unfamilar area of the US. It isn't, nothing like it and it took a few years to more or less come to terms with living abroad. I got a job working at the University of Dundee (Scotland) in Obs/Gyne as a ...Expand for more
lab tech. After a few months I got tired of being treated like a grunt and I looked into getting my pharmacy qualification recognized in the UK. I had a really wierd out of body like experience where I spoke english at a group of elderly old farts that refused to understand anything I said and I came to truly understand our special relationship with the UK (it's a myth). I was sentenced to complete a year course at a college in Sunderland (England) to make my pharmacy qualification 'equvalent' to the UK version. I learned, among other things, how to elegantly wrap a potion in wax paper. (I now wrap everybodies Xmas presents really nicely) I then spent a year doing a pre-registration year at Ninewells Hospital pharmacy which turned into a permanent position when I finished. I endured 2 years as a hospital pharmacist before leaving to have our first child, William in 1989. Catriona followed in 1991, Patrick (sadly stillborn) in '92, Richard in '93 and Robert in '95. In 1998 we left Dundee to buy our own Pharmacy shop in a small rural village in Bellingham Northumberland (England). Terry had been getting more and more fed up with his job and this seemed a good way for him to get out of the rat race (and push me into it!). We have been here ever since and I have since then had no time to pursue friendships (old or new) hobbies or anything else. But, I have found some satisfaction in being a pharmacist afterall! And running a shop in particular.
