Gladys's Story

After graduating from Decatur, I had a very brief stay in Indianapolis. I lived for a short time at the Birtha Ballard Women's Residence and then an apartment next door. I worked for USF&G insurance. I moved to Chicago in 1968, the week of the Democratic Convention and was there during the riots. It was a scary but exciting time. It took a while for my clothes to air out from tear gas. I worked at USF&G, Chicago, and then Kenyon & Eckhart Advertising and then Earle Ludgin Advertising. A turning point in my life was the tragic Kent State riot and murder. I became interested in the anti-Vietnam war messages, though I was never an active protester. It was a senseless "conflict" that killed many young men, including our classmate David Denny. My heart ached when I learned of his death. Because our names were close in the alphabet (Denny and Delp), we were always next to each other in lines and in class. He was a nice kid who didn't deserve to die (none of them did) so young shortly after graduation. I found his name on the Vietnam Memorial in Washing, D.C. I left Chicago in 1970 to move to Boston, Massachusetts. I worked at BBD&O advertising and eventually worked at Boston University, where I attended classes. Because of the many unfair labor practices, I became active in a union dri...Expand for more
ve for clerical workers at BU. We won the election! I was in support of the Equal Rights Amendment and along with my union friends, marched in Washington, D.C. in support of the ERA Eventually, I graduated from Northeastern University with a major in Journalism. I did my co-op at The Boston Globe, where I met my husband, Lincoln. He was an editor at The Worcester Telegram. Following graduation, I worked at a nursing trade publication and then worked in the public relations department of Mass. Eye & Ear Infirmary and Newton Wellesley Hospital. We have one daughter who is now 25. I joined the faculty at Northeastern University, School of Journalism. I received my MS in Law and Public Policy in 2014. In that year I left full-time teaching to become the Graduate Coordinator for the School of Journalism at NU. I retired last July but continue to teach part-time. I am vehemently opposed to Trump and am planning to work on whoever is the candidate who will oppose him. There's still a lot to sort out in terms of which Democrat I will support. It is imperative for the sake of this country, that Trump doesn't have another term! I enjoy reading, writing, art, and playing with my two cats and my one dog. I'm also working on my baking skills, relearning the piano, and improving my math skills.
