Gladys's Story
Gladys is from Troy, New York. Gladys's schools include Troy High School. Gladys later attended the University at Albany, SUNY earning a Master of Social Work in 2011 and a Bachelors of Arts in 2009 major African American History and minor Sociology. Gladys also attend Hudson Valley Community College and earned an Associates in Applied Sciences in 1993, majoring in Human Services.
Gladys has volunteered in many human service organizations such as Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless, Commission of Economic Opportunity of the Greater Capital Region, Teresian House, and Albany Community Action Partnership (ACAP). As a result of a diagnoses of Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2011 (an Autoimmune disease) shortly after earning her master’s degree she has been unable to pursue a career in the field of human services. However she strives to defeat her physical limitations with upcoming Orencia infusions in December 2016.
Music Gladys likes includes Boys II Men, Aretha Franklin, and Al Jarreau. Books Gladys likes include The White Witch of Rosehall, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Movies Gladys likes include Schindler's List, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the Color Purple, Belle, and Driving Miss Daisy to name a few. Gladys currently owns a DVD Collection of over 2,500 movies.
One of Gladys's favorite quotes is:"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: "The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life", The Lenght of Life, as we shall use it, is not its duration, not its longevity. It is rather the push of life forward to its personal ends and ambitions. It is the inward concern for one's personal welfare. The Breadth of Life is the outward concern for the welfare of others. The Height of Life is the upward reach toward God. These are the three dimensions of life, and without the due development of all, no life becomes complete, Life at its best is a great triangle. At one angle stands the individual person, at the other angle stands other persons, and at the tip top stands God. Unless these three are concatenated, working harmoniously together in a single life, that life is incomplete.

Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar’s History
Charles Buchanan and William Barnet founded Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar in 1996 as a response to concerns about opportunities for local young people to develop the skills and experience to meet the growing need for an educated workforce in the region. Initially modeled after a successful program in Philadelphia, Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar developed a one-to-one student support program that identified promising, under-served young people with ambitions to succeed in high school and college. After a feasibility study, the program was launched in both Albany and Troy.
In 1997, we inducted our first classes of students as 10th graders in both Albany and Troy and in 1999, we honored our first class of high school graduates at a graduation celebration.
In 2000, our program expanded to include Schenectady High School, thanks to the efforts of longtime board member Geraldine Golub.
In 2003, we honored our first cohort of college graduates.
Over the years, we have developed partnerships with local organizations, colleges and businesses to develop programs and opportunities that enhance the lives of our students and strengthen our community.
As of 2021, we have supported more than 297 local students as they earned their college degrees, and we actively work with more than 200 Scholars in high school and college.
Our blend of personalized academic support, long-term mentoring and financial assistance makes a difference in our students' lives.
