Glen's Story

I have lived in Huntsville, Al for 22 years. I retired from the Army out of Redstone, Arsenal and stayed. I work for a small engineering company that provides system engineering and project management services - some directly to NASA and the Army but mostly to the big boys, Lockheed & Boeing. I am on a contract to Lockheed right now to support the Targets and Countermeasures Program. My wife Emily and I are both on our 2d marriage - this one has lasted 37 years. We have 3 children between us - my 2 and her 1 and none together. We have 7 grandchildren ranging in age from 10 - 24. After my 1st marriage failed, I joined the Army, went to flight school and to Viet Nam. While I was in Savannah, Ga between tours, I met Emily and we were married by a drunk Justice of the Peace 2 weeks before I went back for my 2d tour. While on active duty, I completed a BS and a Masters. I attended my first reunion a few years ago and noticed that most of the class stayed right there in California. What's up with that? You guys are a bunch of home boys! Doris Turner and I seem to be the only adventurous ones in the bunch. Come visit us some time. Here in Alabama (I guess it's true also for Doris in Georgia), we now have indoor plumbing, electricity, paved roads and the like. We even have a Walmart!!! [[[[[[[[[[[[[[ I see that some have viewed my profile. However, since I am not a "Gold" member, I cannot see any of the comments. For reasons I will not go into, I am not a fan of Classmates.com. I am using it only because it appears to be the only option for the reunion. However, here is my email it any would like to correspond: glenmettler at knology.net Note - I have to list it that way because the classmate policy does not allow the at sign. ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] Well...I caved and bought a year's membership so I c...Expand for more
ould read the mail etc. I also got to see where people lived. Although most of the class is still in and around California, there are several brave souls who have ventured into the wilderness with me. I just returned from my grandson's hi school graduation in Oklahoma and discovered a classmate (2 years behind us) who lives only a few miles away from my daughter. I have sent a few messages to try and motivate our classmates to write a brief story and post some pictures. Come on guys, surely there are some out there with more hair than me :-) Let me wax philosophical and theological for a moment. Like some of you, I grew up very poor. Although my name is Mettler, my family did not have the same socio-economic standing as the name implied. My dad went only to the third grade. He was a farm laborer making $1 per hour in the 50s. Statistically, I should be in an equivalent status, but, because of various circumstances, I have done some better. I was reading in the Psalms a few years ago and I came across Psalm 16.6 that fit me perfectly. It says: ¿The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; yes, I have a good inheritance.¿ I am not a CEO in a Fortune 500 company. I have not made millions in the stock market. I have not been elected to the Senate. I have not invented the next best thing. I have not achieved nearly as much as some of you. I am, however, comfortable. I have a great wife, wonderful children and grandchildren, good friends, a good job, a great country¿.and I have my health. While it is true the economy is bad, people are loosing their homes and their jobs and the politics of it all is less than encouraging, I find myself coming back to Psalm 16.6 ¿The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; yes, I have a good inheritance.¿ I hope that all of you can say the same.
