Glen's Story
Well, I expect very few people remember me except maybe Bill Cowling and Cynthia Nelms. Got uprooted from the small town high school I was attending in Winnsboro, TX my senior year, which made it hard to meet people that I did not know. Anyhow, went to NTSU for a year and a half after graduation and joined the Navy one step ahead of the draft after losing my college deferment. Was actually probably the best thing that ever happened to me. After boot camp in the dead of winter (Jan 67) at Great Lakes Boot Camp just outside Chicago, I went to the USS Blueback (SS 581), which was a diesel boat, and earned my submarine dolphin pin. Got married between leaving Blueback and reporting to Navy Nuclear Power School in 1968. Then it was kind of a whirlwind of ships and schools including USS Hawkbill (SSN 666), USS Barb (SSN 596, and USS Haddock (SSN 621). ...Expand for more
Was supposed to report to USS Guitarro (SSN 665) when I graduated from prototype training at S1W in Idaho, but Mare Island Naval Shipyard managed to submerge her by the pier with the hatches open; hence the change to Hawkbill. The Navy sent me to school at the University of Mississippi, where I graduated with a BSEE and a commission as an Ensign. 20 years in submarines was a fun ride even though it cost me a marriage. Remarried now and ended up with 3 children between the two marriages. Now have 12 grandchildren and 3 great gransons (I am holding out for a great grand daughter). Posted a picture taken during my last sea tour on USS Haddock in 1984 so there have been some age related changes since then. Been a good life so far. My proudest achievement is 51 years service to the U.S. Submarine Force (total active duty and civilian employment).
