Glen's Story

The Long and the Short...Mainly short! Graduated 1966, but you knew that. Joined the Marine Corps as a Private. Spent 1969 and 70 in Viet Nam and flew 350 combat missions as a .50 Cal door gunner...one mission did not go so well and we took a different helicopter home. Spent most of my 24 year Marine Corps career in Air Traffic Control and airport management. Did Serve as a Marine Corps Drill Instructor. Was selected to Warrant Officer then to 1st Lieutenant. Retired in 1990 as a Major and the Commanding Officer of a Marine Wing Support Squadron. Attended Southern Illinois University, Amphibious Warfare School and Marine Corps Command and Staff College. I've managed both General Aviation and International Airports. In 2014 I'll celebrate 50 years as a general aviation pilot. I retired from the world of large airport management in the late 199...Expand for more
0's and the luxury of flying my own airplane back and forth to work every day. Oh well...life goes on. I still fly and am currently designing a replica 1930's autogyro (a cross between an airplane and a helicopter). Married to my wife (a Claremont Girl) for what will soon be 47 years. We have two kids and a few grandkids. Being retired and retiring are two different matters. I currently design my own CNC plasma cutting equipment and large 600* powder coating ovens that I use to build and powder coat aircraft weather vanes out of plate steel. Mostly military aircraft and helicopters which has been an active hobby until recently. Like so many of us that served in Viet Nam, Agent Orange, and Parkinson's is taking a toll on my health, so I've slowed down some. Semper Fi, Glen Porter, Major USMC (Ret.) Private to Major via CWO-4 1966 until 1990
