Glenda's Story
After highschool, Scott & I enlisted in the USArmy, in the delayed entry program, & eloped. After basic training & AIT, we were stationed in Augsburg, FRG for a couple of years. We were fortunate enough to live off base. We met so many amazing people there & by living off base, we actually lived as Germans. I also enrolled at the University of Maryland (Munich Campus), majored in Business Admin & minored in Computer Science. UM offered a limited choice of majors at the time.
We traveled quite a bit while stationed in Augsburg, FRG. We often went to Bertchesgaden, Munich & the Black Forest. I used to go to Konnigsbrunn almost every week...it was only 10 mins on the Autobahn (B6). We've been all over Germany, Italy, parts of France (especially Paris), French & Italian Riviera, & Greece. I have to say although I love Paris & Southern Bavaria....our favorite vacation had to be in Greece. The entire trip was incredible....the sights in Athens (Mt. Olympus etc..) & in Crete (Knosis ruins & a Church built into the side of a mountain on a major highway). The beaches were gorgeous and the water was crystal clear...when you look down, without going underwater, you could see the fish swimming around you. And the very best of Greece were the warm & friendly people & the FOOD was phenomenal!!! I think we gained 10 pounds in the 2 weeks we were there and we did a lot of hiking. We rarely used a taxi.
After being Honorably Discharged, we moved back to Hillside (love my hometown!), bounced a bit from job to job for about a couple of years while still attending college to try and complete my degree.
I then decided to switch majors & enrolled at FIT, majored in Fashion Design/Merchandising, while working as a Costume Designer for a few Ballet & Theater Co's & after a couple of semesters at FIT, I was hired as an Asst. Childrenswear Designer (4-6x & 7-14) for one of the largest CW Houses in Manhattan. In 6 mo's I was promoted to Associate Designer & after another 6 mo's I was hired by a smaller House as Head Designer for Infants & Toddlers Division. I was also freelancing at the time for off-off Broadway Musical & Theater Co's.
After a few years working fulltime in the Garment (Fashion) Industry, I decided to freelance fulltime. I designed for Patti Austin & a few upscale men &...Expand for more
womenswear design co's. I also expanded my freelance business as a Hair/Makeup Artist for film, (music) video & print. I've worked with Kevin Smith & his crew at View Askew & other Film Co's as a Costume Designer & Makeup Artist. I've also worked with models & various Musical Artist like Dru Hill, Mother Superia, Byron Stingly etc... I also worked for MAC & made women look breathtaking for their wedding. That was the best bit...to see the look on everyones face when they see how flawless the bride looks.
About 10 years ago, I re-injured my back & neck & pretty much burned out. I've been disabled since; but I still work as a Makeup Artist from time to time. About a year after my re-injury, I enrolled at Parsons School of Design, receiving a Certificate in Graphic Design & Web Design.
We moved to South Beach for the climate & I had one of the most wonderful experiences in my life. I met my soul-families there and it was a wonderful community. I also freelanced as a Designer/Makeup Artist/Web Designer for a few people in South Beach & Ft. Lauderdale.
Scott and I have also started our own production company. We create original comic book characters & comic strips. We have a complete comic strip ready for syndication. One or two of our comic books should be ready for print in about a month. It has all been copyrighted & 3 are ready for trademark. Scott is one of the most creative writers I've ever read. My friend Shivaun is second.
After an illness in the family, we decided to move our operation to Bethlehem "Christmas Town" PA so we can be closer to family. Jersey taxes are outrageous! So far we love it here. Even though this is PA, Bethlehem is a small city. Kind of reminds me of certain sections of Queens & Brooklyn. Most places are within walking distance & public transportation is pretty decent. So for now we are here to stay. At least until I start getting "happy feet"...hahaha!
I'm also back to freelancing for wedding gowns & eveningwear. Been feeling a bit better, thank God! I have clients in South Beach/Miami, NYC, Jersey, London, Amsterdam & soon to be Dublin. God is good!
I hope & pray that everyone of my classmates are doing well. I know times are hard; but with God in our lives, we can do & get through anything that is thrown our way! KEEP THE FAITH!!!
