Glenda's Story
After graduation, I went to Kent State majoring in Fine Art for 2 years, but left after the shootings, and took a few years break from school. I moved to California, then to Alabama, where I attended Auburn University and majored in graphic design and illustration. I met my husband in Auburn, we married in 1977, then moved to Champaign-Urbana, IL, so David could work on his Masters in Library Science and I could work on my Masters in Graphic Design at Univ. of Ill. David continued on at UI to get his Ph.D. and then we started moving around the country as he took different Director positions in medical libraries.
Over the past 39 years we have moved 10 times, living in San Francisco, New York City, Houston, Lexington, KY, and Augusta, GA, just to name a few places. I have followed David around the country, working 15 years as a graphic designer and technical/medical/scientific illustrator at several universities and M.D. Anderson Cancer Institute in Houston, and then 20 years as a book designer and illustrator for various Universi...Expand for more
ty Presses and McGraw-Hill Publishing Co. in its Higher Education division.
Finally, after 35 years of working, I retired in 2012. Now I spend most of my time designing and creating art quilts and playing with my 2 Flemish Giant bunnies, Abby and Django.
In April 2016 we moved to Knoxville, TN -- our last move, I hope. We bought a beautiful home on a wooded mountainside, with a small koi pond, our very own resident wild peacock, Percy, and his buddies -- a flock of about 50 wild turkeys that wander through our forest. About a dozen or more (usually the males) stop by every day to visit the pond for a drink or a nap under the trees right outside my studio windows. Percy the peacock spends his mornings on our front porch.
We love it here! We can see mountains everywhere--the Smokies to the east and the Cumberlands to the west. I can't wait until Fall to see all the colors in the trees. It's been a long time since we've lived someplace with such a beautiful view and a colorful change of seasons. Can't wait to get out and explore!
