Gloria's Story
Life
I have had an interesting journey since June, 1967. After graduation, I did not want to see or read another book or write another report. That only lasted until Jan, 1968 when I enrolled in Detroit College of Business. I then got married in 1970 to an Airman. We spent the next two years in Adana, Turkey and my daughter was born in 1973. I opened a mom & pop grocery store in 1975 until the City of Detroit offered me a position as a Clerk in 1977. Wow, $5.00/hr. I was overwhelmed (CO-Op in 1966-67 was paying $1.25/hr). I have progressed through the City from Clerk/typist to Computer Operator to Computer Programmer (Jr., Intermediate, Sr., Principal and then to Manager of Computer Applications and Client Server Development and 26 yea...Expand for more
rs later, I am now the Director of Elections for Detroit, appointed by the City Clerk, Jackie L. Currie. Thanks to Mr. Kaczmarski (my computer programming instructor at CASS TECH and Evelyn Carter (Powell), also class of '67, who encouraged me to return to school to obtain my degree. If I had not returned, I would not have had the credentials needed to qualify for my current position. Mr. Kaczmarski taught us how to "think" and challenge the unknown. He had us "going (thinking) where no man has gone before" a long time before Star Trek was popular. I thank them both. I now have two children 31 and 23 and two grandchildren 11 and 2-1/2. I now look forward to retirement soon and moving somewhere very warm. I still love all my TECHNICIANS.
