Gloria's Story

I always wanted to be a Psychologist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a far fetched idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. Sleep, sit out on back deck, hike, camp in mtns is how I relax. The wildest stuff I did was throw class parties where 200-300 came, usually once or twice a year, while in HS. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have quiet, organization and scheduling, and smoke breaks to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My hero? I have many: my mother, the wind beneath my wings; my son who so courageously died; my other son who succeeds with sheer determination despite difficulties; my husband, who loves me despite putting up with so much I first went to N.U. in Evanston, then married and went to Oahu, Hawaii, then to Pensacola, then 3 years in Quito Ecuador, then south Fla (got divorced), then Corpus Christi TX thru hurricane Camille and Celia, working for architect, supporting my 2 sons, then to Silver Spring Md. for 5 years, then to Central Fla. to be near family, where I finished my Master's degree and worked as a therapist, then had my private practice 8 years while caring for Mom along with my hubby, who also helped care for her til she died. In 1998, we came to Hendersonville NC where I continue as a therapist. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is old friends from HS, because I would like to know how their lives have been lived. I love my 2 dogs, one a "Carolina dog" or North American Dingo named Foxie, the other half-Corgi half-Scottie named Webster(who I like to call Skeezix). I have always had dogs. These are my fur babies My biggest surprise was burying my son who died at age 37, and my grandson at age 6. Other than that, it is the journey of my life I call "Mr Toad's wild ride"; and my fondest surprise, my husband. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel bathrooms and basement office and add on a new master suite in the back of the house on the main floor.. My dream home would be a brick ranch located just outside of town, in a quiet wooded area, with a fence around the yard for the dogs.. My sons taught me what true courage is, and true determination. They taught me to eliminate self-pity, and that the biggest waste of time is getting money, and the best use of time is loving your family, treating each moment "to live like you are dying". Merella Mensing, who was my first grade teacher, by now deceased, because she was so loving and encouraging is the teacher I would love to see. If I won $100 million, I'd give part of it to my son and daughter-in-law (of my deceased son), then spend the rest on my husband and I, charity for animals, homeless people and elderly; and retirement. I lived in a dorm at NU. I joined Alpha Delta Pi sorority. I did not enjoy Northwestern Univ., it was too big. I loved my sisters in the sorority. I was too foolish to stay and finish. I went back at age 30 to complete my education at Univ. of Central Fla. I also certified as a police officer in Fla. and learned...Expand for more
I could take care of myself. I was in police training classes with 139 Viet Nam Vets, some with marksmanship medals, and believe me, I am a good shot! I beat them. To be truly happy, I would be right here in the Western NC paradise with my hubby, retired, working only a little, and doing a lot of camping and just plain living, with the bills all paid off My current age is 67. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be very old indeed. I was so completely innocent. I need to work about 3 more years to get cars and credit cards paid off, so I can "afford" to live on Social Security LOL My first crush? I have no idea. My first true love? He works in NYC as a stock broker. I worried about the twin towers debacle. My best friend would tell you I'm sensitive and sentimental, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as aloof. I like jeans and sweats and comfortable gear, but I also love haute couture (can't afford it and have nowhere to wear it, however. It looks stupid in a tent in the mountains) LOL The weirdest job I ever had was selling insurance; that and being secretary to the purchasing agent of a food chain of 200 grocery stores. I share my home with my husband and 2 dogs, which I find comforting and agreeable. I am one of very few women to ever hold a National Starter's License, and started races at Daytona and Sebring. Starter's stand is the best seat in the house. If I got to do something over again, I would have studied computer technology and made a lot of money. My son's 2nd job w/BA paid 2X what I made with Master's and 25 years of experience as a therapist In 10 years, I hope to be Alive and Vertical. I'm going to get there by Living One Day at a Time. My oldest friend is Sharon. We met when we were 2. We went through grade school together, stayed a week at a time at each other's houses. We used to "play school" taking turns being the teacher. We could read each other's minds, quite literally. We were on the same wave length almost always. We can pick up a conversation on the phone after 2 years, as though we had just talked yesterday. I think most everyone would be surprised to see how young 67 can be, and how old my younger spouse at 55 can be. He has ESP, as well as having been a National Merit Scholar with an IQ over 168. My first job was at Main office of a large grocery chain, where I got paid very little to order food freezers, shoppng carts, and whatever each store needed.. What I remember most about it is Mr. Stevens, who was a very big grouch, and the architectural dept., where one of the architects' wives was a sorority sister of mine. As a very young child, skipping thru the meadow on Van's farm in the Dells, Wisc. in a crepe paper dress my mother made for me, making me look like a queen, is memory I will not forget. The other, in H.S., was driving around with my girlfriends in the Ford retractible top convertible we named "the Barf Wagon". And the parties I threw, and the Corral dances.
