Gloria's Story
Well I've been asked for my story since school and here it is......
After school I joined the Navy, it seemed like I was always a day late or my father made a dollar too much for a scholarship so not wanting to work for Taco Bell (no offense to those that did) I figured that I could get my education in another way so I joined up. It seems like I always lucked into things......like after picking out several careers in the service I got Air Traffic Control School after another applicant failed their physical. When it came time for my discharge I had the option of re-enlisting (which I almost did) but the President fired the striking controllers in 1981 a couple of months before I signed up for another tour. Decision made....I got out and worked for the FAA.
I worked first at Ft. Lauderdale Int'l for 12 years and Daytona Beach Tracon for the next 13. I retired in 2007, 1 year after the FAA forced a set of imposed work rules on the workforce. What had been a fun job became a ch...Expand for more
ore so it was time to leave. My last career luck out....being able to retire when I turned 48.
I have to give the Government credit for 1 thing. It always kept me near the ocean. Whether it was in the Navy at Virginia Beach and Bermuda or the FAA. I always have been a water girl.
I have a son. I am so proud of him. He does good in school and is involved with the Boy Scouts and is developing a love for music. He will soon outgrown his mother and he is only 12! May not seem like much unless you remember that I am also tall.
I still live in Florida, Palm Coast, and now spend my time with my son.....he was disappointed one too many times because of a controller's working hours. I help out with the Little League when they need it and I volunteer with my son's boy scout troop. Also, once in awhile, we help out a rescue league by fostering kittens.
So drop me a line, I'm also on facebook and myspace.....if you can spell my name you'll find me.
Take care! Gloria Class of '76
