Raymond's Story
Life
Born on Halloween,1951, in Mt. Clemens,(just outside Detroit) Michigan; a city kid. Moved to an Ohio farm at age 5; now a country kid. Grew up with a Shelton pony and a Pinto pony. Learned horseback riding at an early age. Catholic school 8 years (Saint Patrick's). Public high school 4 years. LHS. Kent State University, B.S. in Electromechanical Engineering Technology, August 1974. Worked for Caterpillar Tractor Co. in Cleveland under 2 years in Prove Design. Started a business with my older brother, Wayne, in Hawaii. '75~'77. Went bankrupt. Moved to Seattle. Joined Peace Corps 1979~1981. Taught house wiring, motor controls,etc.,in French,at a technical school(Lycee Technique) in Sokode, Togo, West Africa...a French speaking country. Travelled extensively in West Africa after my contract ended. Took a 2 night, 3 day trip up the Niger River in a local boat. Spent 2 nights in Timboutou, Mali. Drank warm beers there one night, while listening to Frank Zappa's "Joe's Garage," and being attacked ...Expand for more
by kamikaze mosquitos and locus. (Got parasites, malaria and food poisoning in West Africa.) From Niamay, Niger, flew to Algeria, took a ferry to France, went to Paris to study art. Moved to Seattle in 1981. Lived in Pioneer Square when it was somewhat dangerous. Opened an art studio there. Had a wonderfully big artist loft and put on many art shows. Pioneer Square got gentrified about 1985. Made good money as a signpainter. Finally got married, to Leslie Weidensee, a writer and linguist, in 1990 at age 37(she was 30), a Wisconsin woman who I met in West Africa 7 years earlier. Moved to Japan for 2 years. Moved back to Leetonia for 7 years. Moved back to Japan. Now in Japan for the last 10 years. We both earned our black belts here in martial arts. Climbed Mt. Fuji, and 12 other famous mountains, etc,etc etc...Happily married. Enjoy Japan,the language,people,history and culture. Still painting and drawing. Have an exhibition of my paintings once a year at the International Center in Inuyama. End.
