After graduating from LHS in 1970, I went to Cornell University majoring in Chemistry. I realized in my Junior year that I was also close to completing a degree in History, so I did. I realized that 1) job prospects were better in chemistry, and 2) schools would pay me to get a Ph.D. in chemistry. I went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, then (and now) one of the top 5 for Analytical Chemistry. After 4 years, I accepted a faculty position at the University of Delaware, where I had my own research group. 6 students received Ph.D. degrees under me, about 8 received Master's degrees, and over 70 pursued undergraduate research projects. I also hosted for a Fulbright Fellow, a Professor from the University of Cairo. In 1985, I joined the Polymer Products Department of DuPont for a "no travel component job." Within 12 months I had been to WV, VA, OH, KY, TN, NC, SC, TX and Canada. I went to Europe in 1988 and to Japan in 1989, responsible for installing near-infrared spectrometers in- and at-line.
