Michael R.'s Story
Life
Colonel Michael R. Gonzales graduated with highest honors from New Mexico Military Institute in 1975, with an A.A. and commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. He graduated from New Mexico State University with honors in 1977 with a B.A. in History and Government. In 1994 he earned an M.P.A. from Shippensburg University.
He served tours as the Assistant S-3 and Adjutant for the 6th Battalion (IHAWK), 52nd ADA, 32nd AADCOM in Wuerzburg, Germany. In 1983 he was appointed commander of Battery A, 5th Battalion (Roland), a part of the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force. He was promoted to major in 1985 and served as the Battalion S-3 until 1988, until reassigned as Executive Officer, 1st Battalion (Chaparral), 200th ADA.
In 1990, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and assigned as Secretary of the General Staff / Deputy Chief of Staff for the Adjutant General of New Mexico. In 1991 he assumed command of the 6th Battalion (Chaparral), 200th ADA and led it to three national records....Expand for more
He graduated from the U.S. Army War College in 1994 and deployed as the G-5, U.S. Army Central Command (Forward) and 3rd U.S. Army to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for ÂOperation Desert Falcon.Â
He was later reassigned to National Guard Bureau in Washington as Chief of the Force XXI Task Force. In 1996, he was promoted to Colonel and appointed Chairman of the Department of Strategy and Planning at the Strategic Studies Institute, U.S. Army War College.
In 1998, he was reassigned to the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery School and served as Deputy Assistant Commandant / Deputy Chief of Staff. In 2001, Colonel Gonzales became Director of Training and Integration and later Director of Strategic Operations and Missile Defense Integration for National Missile Defense at U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command.
Colonel Gonzales is married to the former Christine S. Smith, a Financial Buyer at Nordstrom. The couple, has two children, Gabrielle A. Gonzales and Michael R. Gonzales II.
