Gordon's Story
Life
I graduated from Tulane Medical School in New Orleans in 1978 and then completed a Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency at Tulane University/Charity Hospital also in New Orleans. I became interested in AIDS after first seeing ill patients in 1983. After encountering unusual AIDS-related infections, I specialized in microbiology and fungal diseases, obtaining subspecialty boards in Medical Microbiology and in Medical and Public Health Mycology in 1986 and 1991, respectively. I further specialized in Cytopathology in 1992. I worked as a medical center laboratory director until 2004 when I was able to take early retirement (!) on a defined pension. I then became a reference laboratory director for a large laboratory in Sacramento which processes 27 million medical specimens a year; a really interesting job.
I teach periodically at University of California, Davis, School of Medicine in Sacramento and received the pathology residents' teaching award in 2012. I had been promoted to full professor back in 2004.

erican Board of Pathology. I completed an atlas of fungi of medical importance last year and presented at the American Society of Clinical Pathology on the fungal infections.
In 2013, I became the medical director of Quest DIagnostics' Los Angeles laboratory, one of the largest free-standing medical laboratories in the world. We process over 100,000 blood vials per night from over 45,000 patients. I am one of seven corporate members of Quest Diagnostics as Western Region medical director, overseeing all Quest laboratories in the six western states.
My wife and I decided to retire after I was offered the opportunity to write a new book on fungal diagnostics.
Well, the Color Atlas of Mycology was released last week (October 2018). I.started back to work as vice- chair of Clinical Pathology at LSU School of Medicine. The Dean appointed me to be the Chairman of the Department of Pathology in July, 2018. My wife and I closed on a house in New Orleans so it looks like we will be here for a while. I was just presented with a contact for my third Pathology book for completion in 2020 and I am working on the premise for the next one. Maybe I can keep the books moving!
