Grant's Story
Oh what a story. It's a long, long one... Well, as most of you may remember, I was going to Citrus CC while at Sunflower and by the time I got to Charter Oak was going to UCLA. Unfortunately, my parents not degreed, and our wonderful counselor (I can't remember her name), no one made sure I got enrolled so I could get the credit. If I would have got credit & done the required general Ed. I'd have my PhD in computer sciences/electronics. So anyways, one day when I asked Mr. Schaeffer (Algebra Teacher) if I could come after school and go over his lecture because I didn't understand it, he blew me out, told me he didn't have time for me, etc. So in turn, having already been a computer programmer for IBM (my summer job '75), I didn't have time for them either and blew out the whole group, including high school overall. In hindsight not the best decision I ever made. Later on, I wound up working in construction that had it's beginnings in the tract of houses they built in the avocado grove to the east of the football field. Completed an apprenticeship by the time I was 19, heck 20 bucks an hour with a company car and gas card wasn't too bad for 1980. I mixed sound and provided technical support for a rock and roll band for a few years then a friend of mine's dad got his electrical contractors license, and I went back to what I did at Charter Oak Elementary, playing with wires. Well, I've now been in Electrical Contracting/Construction for 25+ years, wired everything but a nuke plant, was a partner in a 300 man shop, crashed on an ATC, airlifted to LLUMC in a coma, ripped off by the partners, but oh well, I survived and didn't loose my...Expand for more
house. I do miss the 38' Chris in the slip in Back Bay. So I finally settled down and got married when I was around 40, married a farm girl from Bradbury, BA in lost civilizations and dead languages (arts & letters, history) who went back and got an AS in nursing so she could get a good paying job. She used to write for NBC but you can make more as an R.N. We've got a 7 year old son, live in the same house I did when I began kindergarten at COES. I'm currently a senior project manager for a building controls and automation firm located in San Dimas. I work a lot, work on the house a lot (still a computer nerd, touch screens for everything), still into photography, I shoot the videos of my son's performances at his school and author DVDs for all the parents. We're looking around to buy some retirement/weekend property, but just haven't broke down and done it yet. Living in the same place all these years, I do see a few of our classmates ever so often, I saw Scott Kyles a few months ago, Alan Rowe a year or so ago, Craig Schaeffer and his wife Inez every once in a while walking by, I see Carrie, Lori, & Tammy Moles fairly often, and every once in a while someone new will pop up. That's about it for the condensed version I guess. I look forward to hearing from any of you it's been a long time, I left Charter Oak in 1977, didn't GED until I was looking at getting my MBA in 1998, did the GED but when I looked at the cost of the MBA vs. how much of a salary increase I could expect I decided against it. It just didn't pay out. Oh well take care and feel free to drop me a line.
Sincerely,
Grant Jones
