Grant's Story

Let's see what this "story wizard" wants to ask. "How do you hope old friends remember you?" With fond, positive memories. How else?. "I always wanted to be a ____ when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a ___ idea. As it turns out, they were ___." I never knew what the heck I wanted to be when I grew up and my family thought that was a lousy idea. So did I. Of course they were right...but that didn't help. "How do you blow off steam? Describe your favorite way to relax." I don't really. I don't stay mad very long. I'll get annoyed and churlish for a short time then get over it. The best way for me to relax, though, is to cuddle with my wife. Nothing better than that! "What's the wildest thing you ever did in school?" Ha. I wasn't wild at school. At all. Ever. Those who knew me will know this to be true and shake their heads sadly thinking I should have "loosened up". Ah, well. "If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have ___, ____, and ___ to be able to deal with the day-to-day." Hmm. Well, for dealing with day-to-day stuff, I guess something like good co-workers, a supportive supervisor, and something meaningful to do. "Do you have a hero? Talk about where your inspiration comes from." Hmm. Well, alas, I don't think I have ever truly been "inspired" in this way, nor do I recall ever looking at anyone as my personal "hero". I consider folks like the firemen and police and military personnel who put their lives on the line to protect me and mine to be heroes, but that's more generalized than a personal inspiration kind of figure. I've never really looked at someone and said "gosh, I wish I could be like ___." "Where have you lived? Why did you move?" I've lived in San Bernardino and Riverside, California. I was born and rasied in S.B. and moved to Riverside for college. I moved back to S.B. to find a cheaper place only to have the good fortune to have moved right below the woman I later married. May not have been many miles, but boy, was that the move of a lifetime! "The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is __ __, because ___." Well, if we talking about *anyone*, I'd pick my father--we never had a chance to really say goodbye before he died and I'd love to tell him about my wife and his grandchildren. If it is only limited to people in my life who are still (hopefully) alive.. hmm... Anthony Reed. He was a good friend and I have nary a clue as to what happened to him. "Sports. Reality TV. Pets. Share your obsessions." Well, if I'm obssessed with anything, it's my family. However, if this was to only mean things I'm really interested in... I'd probably point to science fiction, although I would call it something I'm interested in and really like more than something I'm truly "obsessed with." "Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect. What's been your biggest surprise?" The one thing that surprised me, really, about how life went for me was how I ended up spending, up until last year, my entire adult life at UC Riverside as a student and then a staff member. I thought I'd be there for 2 years and have to leave (I never managed to stay at any school prior to that more than 2 years). Four years at the most. But not 22 years! "If I could improve my home I'd remodel __ and add on a ___. My dream home would be ___." I'd remodel my kitchen and add on an ...Expand for more
extra room. The dream home would have all the space we need for ourselves, a nice area for my in-laws to stay that could truly be their own space and a dedicated space for my wife and myself to set up as we please. Plus a playroom that could be shut away for the kids to use. "Parent? Share what you've learned from your kids." About kids I've learned everything from my own kids. Probably the most important tip being for young kids, routine is everything. Come up with one and stick with it as much as possible, at least for the regular weekdays. Otherwise, I've learned plenty about myself from them--my strengths and weakness both magnified for my viewing pleasure and horror. "Which teacher would you love to soee again? Why?" I'm not terribly sure who that might be. Although when I think about it, one of the best I had was Howard Birdsill. Although there are others that would be interesting to meet, too. "If I won $100 million, I'd give __ of it to __, then spend the rest on __, __, and ___." Well, I guess I'd give half to Uncle Sam and spend the rest on providing for my kids college, a nice retirement fund, and then a better house, the best fuel-efficient car I could find, and I'm sure a million other things. Oh, and yes, I'm sure some would go to charity, too. :) "Ever live in a dorm? Join the Greek system? Talk about campus life." Yes, I was in the dorm. Some of my most enduring friendships came from people I met there. Dorm life was great--you met all sorts of people, it certainly helped me to grow up, and it was fun. It was a good time in my life. I have lots of fond memories although I'd certainly not want to go back :) As for the Greek system, sorry, no. I had quite a bit of disdain for a system that seemed all to focused on exclusiveness. "To be truly happy, you would be where, doing what, with whom." I'd be with my family, with everyone happy and healthy, and doing something we all enjoy. "My current age is __. When i was 12, I thought that people my age now would be __. I was so completely __." Hah. Well, I actually had the foresight as a child not to make nasty comments about those older than I was. I knew damn well that I, too, was going to be older one day, too. I'm 40 now and when I was 12, I thought it seemed a hell of a long way off, but I didn't think 40 was really olllld or anything. 110, now that's, perhaps "old." :) "Working hard? Reveal your career aspirations." I've recently shifted from what I was doing at UCR to being a Technical Editor. I enjoy that and my aspirations are pretty basic--I'd like to improve as an editor, increase my responsibilities, increase my income, and be successful. All of that without sacrificing too much family time. Oh, and if there are any typos in all of this, well, I haven't edited it yet, sorry :) "What happened to your first crush?" I don't know what happened to anyone I had a crush on in the past, actually. They've all long since disappeared from my life. Plus none of them evolved past the "crush" phase, especially on in my school years. The first real "crush" I had, though, lasted several years. The last time I saw her was when I was a freshman in college. "My best friend would tell you I'm __ but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as ___." Hmm. Perhaps "funny" for the first and "quiet" or "shy" for the latter. Maybe.
