Grant's Story

My Life - Where to start? ... I began my career just seven months out of high school. I started out as a corrections officer. I did that for a few months then completed more training and became a police officer. I was fortunate enough to become one of the youngest Deputy Sheriffs for the County of Los Angeles at 19 years old. I was able to buy my first home not far from where I grew up in 1999. In 2002, I got married. Around that time I began drag racing (Summit Series Pro Division) and was lucky enough to pick up a few sponsors. In 2005, I transferred police departments to be closer to home. In 2006, my first beautiful daughter was born. In late 2007, my wife left and I raised my daughter while still working very hard. In 2008, I began dating a wonderful woman, who I married in 2011. I was promoted to Detective and assigned to oversee development and training for a regional biometric identification program (cop technology stuff). Coolest job ever! Just over a year later, my second beautiful daughter was born. In 2013, I had to get back to real work again. After a couple months of working all sorts of cases, I was asked to head up part of the gang team (I know... Kinda funny because I'm far from intimidating... lol!). In 2014, I changed things up again and was selected to be a Homicide detective... Very interesting and fulfilli...Expand for more
ng work. In early 2017, I was promoted to Sergeant and assigned as a watch commander in one of the county jails. While doing all these things, I continue to teach biometrics along with ID theft and fraud to cops and community groups... Good times. I have always been an advocate for fair labor practices and was elected to my union's Executive Board in 2011. In 2017, I was elected President of the Sheriff’s Employees’ Benefit Association (SEBA) and represent over 3,800 law enforcement professionals. That is my full time job now. Although I’m still a Sheriff’s Sergeant, I serve on the Board of Directors for the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) in Sacramento, the California Coalition of Law Enforcement Associations (CCLEA), the Southern California Aliance of Law Enforcement (SCALE), the California Peace Officers Memorial Foundation in Sacramento and am also a board member of the Inland Empire Chapter of the International Footprinters Association. So when I'm not investigating a crazy case, training a bunch of cops, or helping my little girls with their homework, I'm usually attending a charity event or political function somewhere around the State. I remain close with my family and am very proud of how successful each one of my brothers and sisters has become. Other than that, life is pretty much the same. :-)
