Greg's Story

Life After high school, I earned B.A. degrees in history and journalism, joined VISTA (like a domestic Peace Corps, now called AmeriCorps) and worked in Kentucky. I was a newspaper reporter for seven years. Then, I got an M.F.A. in broadcasting/cinema at UNCG. I was public information director for Greenville, N.C.,(a BAD gig) before ECU hired me as student publications coordinator and media adviser. I supervised 150 students working at the twice-weekly newspaper, a 24-hour FM radio station, a quarterly minority students magazine, a print yearbook, a video yearbook and a photo lab. After that, I got a job teaching broadcasting and print journalism in the Communication Department. I tried to go back to school for a PH.D at UNC-CH. My first year, I had to teach four different courses at ECU, take three courses at UNC and make a four-hour round-trip commute three times a week. That was incredibly stupid. I left ECU and went to school full-time, but didn't like the public relations prog...Expand for more
ram they let me into (I wanted to study broadcasting again). The Reidsville Review, a daily newspaper in Rockingham County, then hired me as its managing editor. We really cranked it out. I quit when work weeks hit 75 hours. Now, I teach radio and television courses, as well as English composition and grammar, at High Point University. I also teach a broadcast journalism course. HPU has almost completed its new fine arts building, which includes a new TV studio and radio studio. I helped write a TV grant application that got us $100,000. This summer, I'll have to supervise the equipment installation, learn the software, figure out how to teach it and hit the ground running about August 20. I share a small apartment in Greensboro with my girlfriend, Holly, whom I met at an African music concert in a Tate Street coffee house. She is sweet, wonderful, smart and cute and doesn't know anything about the '70s (or before). I'd love to hear from anyone from Smith. Best wishes to us all!
