Greg's Story
Life
I moved to China Lake from San Diego in 1978 and graduated from Burroughs High in 1980. I attended the local junior college and then transfered to San Diego State University where I received a BA in Theater Arts.
I worked my way through college and had many fun and intersting jobs. I worked in health spas as a fitness trainer/aerobics instructor, hotels and restaurants
as a waiter, a nightclub as a bouncer, and finally at
the "Improv" as the show announcer and stage tech. While in college I had an internship at channel 10 in San Diego
where I was able to take trips to Los Angeles to observe
the "press junkits" for newly released movies. I was able to meet a variety of publicists connected to the film studios in LA as well as a few famous actors like
John Travolta and Kevin Bacon.
After graduating from SDSU I moved to Los Angeles and first worked at a prestigious nightclub/restaurant called the "Stock Exchange" where I was able to mingle
with people in the tv/film, music, and fashion industries. I was also living in the heart of Hollywood (Melrose & La Brea) and learning about the layout of
Los Angeles area. I worked at the club for about 6 months and then took an assistant manager position at
a cafe located in the Biltmore hotel in downtown LA. I worked there for about 6 monthes and then decided to work
as a sales manager in a department store called the Broadway located in the Beverly Center in West Hollywood.
After about 2 years of working jobs that weren't related to my college major I decided to contact a publicist I had met during one of the junkits while in school in San Diego and I was able to get an interview with the head of the Publicity department on the pico lot. They didn't have any openings but they agreed to give me an internship so that I could come in a couple days a week and learn the system. Since I wasn't getting paid at Fox I went over to Universal Studios and auditioned for a job as a tour guide. Having a degree in Theater an...Expand for more
s some experience acting helped me to get the job and I worked at the Universal Theme park doing the tours for almost a year until I was able to get a paying job at Fox working in the studio mailroom. This was a good move because I was able to move freely throughout the studio and learn a little about every department. I was also able to see
tapings for the tv shows as well as go on to the sets of some of the films that where being done on the studio at that time. Some of the films included: Die Hard, Pretty Women, Preditor 2, Edward Scissorhands.
After the mailroom job I landed a Production Assistant job on the network comedy "True Colors". I worked on the show for 1 season and then took a couple of temp jobs on the lot before leaving to work at a film company called
PM Entertainment. At PM I worked in the camera department
and spent about 3 years working on an assortment of action, comedy, and Science Fiction movies that went staight to cable or overseas into theaters. While at PM Entertainment I was able to network with other crew people which gave me the opportunity to also work on commercials, music videos, and network promos. In 1997 I took a job as a coordinator on an independant comedy feature called "Confessions of a sexist pig". I used my
previous low budget contacts and resources and ended up
moving up to Production Manager on another film and then
on to Line Producer on two more films the following year.
I enjoyed working as a Camera Assistant but it turned out that my education, work experience, and true skills lied in the area of producing. Hence I became a film producer. I have produced several cable movies, music videos, and commercials over the last 10 years and a
3 year job with an international record company producing
concert merchandise for bands touring in North America
and Europe.
I have met many interesting people and done some wondereful things but the short time in Ridgecrest helped me to realize who I really am.... A SURFER!
