Greg Gesterling:

CLASS OF 1966
Lakewood, CA

Greg's Story

After high school graduation, tried JC to avoid the draft. But I wasn't into school. Thereafter, did several years of labor type jobs (factory, water treatment, tow-trucks) , all pretty much capable of career work but not holding my interest. Then in 1972 after a hard night of driving, I had an epiphany that awakened me from sleep. I had to go back to school and become a lawyer. This was a life changing event, especially since I was never a good student. Also, I had no idea how to achieve this goal. So, undeterred, I enrolled at City College for the next semester. After much trial and tribulation trying to raise my mediocre grades, I graduated from City in '74 and was accepted to UC Irvine. as a transfer. However, my father passed in '75 which was very hard on me. I had to quit school to mourn. In '76 I met Julie., a '76 Lakewood grad. Together, we traveled the country ending in Boston, Mass, where we lived for 18 months. Then we decided to move back to SoCal and resume (or start in her case) our college educations. We both enrolled at UC Irvine and were married on campus. I graduated in June, '81 and enrolled at Pepperdine Law School the followin...Expand for more
g semester. Julie transferred to UCLA to finish her degrees (joint BA/MA in Economics). We both graduated in '84. Then we moved back East again, driving the whole way for the third time pulling a U-Haul trailer. Julie was accepted to a Ph.D. program at Princeton, me an LL.M at NYU.. Our first daughter was born in '85. I practiced law from '85 until I retired. Then I went to work for the Feds. Meanwhile, we had another daughter. Sadly and with great sorrow, she passed in '05 just before her 17th birthday, Our first daughter is an aerospace engineer working for private industry on government space-flight projects, most of which she can't discuss. Both Julie and I retired in '18. We sold our big house in Rockville, MD and downsized to a brand new house in Westminster, MD. Now we plan to move back to SoCal sometime in 2021 to be near our remaining siblings. Our hobbies have been competitive horse showing (Julie), and autocross/open track car racing (me mostly but Julie too). Since Covid, we've been sidelined for the whole 2020 season. And Julie has decided to give up her spurs, so we have our remaining horse in retirement too. Look forward to 2021.
