Greg's Story

Life It's a sunny, beautiful February day here in Santa Cruz, CA. The air is clean and crisp, and I've already stoked up on my daily triple Americano. I've lived here since late '99, and married the beautiful and effervescent Eileen Beaudry in June of 2000. Our baby girl Camille was born in Oct., 2004. She is a beautiful delight! And we're expecting our boy, Cavanaugh, in early Dec., 2006. Eileen and I spend most of our free time reading, surfing (the net, not the waves), walking along the beach and in the Redwoods, hanging with friends, and travelling. We're also picking up Bridge, and my wife's trying to get me out on some of her 50+ mile bike rides! I lost my first wife, Deborah, to cancer in 1998. An incredibly tough and painful experience, as you might imagine, but I emerged all the more committed to love and family and service. That's it for now. Hoping you're doing well and will get in touch. You can find me in Santa Cruz, California. Greg School I'd write something here, but who can remember that long ago!!! UPDATE SEPT., '03: Our 30th! High School Reunion was fantastic. It was great to reconnect with old friends and new ones. Looking forward to staying in touch. Actually, I've just reconnected with Terry (Phipps) Campbell and Steve McDonald (who was in the class behind us). It turns out both live near me, Terry in San Jose and Steve in Los Altos. You may recall that Terry and I were high school sweethearts, and then we lived together for about 4 years when she moved down to Stanford after getting her AA degree as a Veterinary Technician. After college, we went our separate ways, but stayed in the same area, even running into each other occassionally. Steve was one of my best friends in high school, and we helped to create the swim team together. He just tracked me down through Classmates and we spent a few hours together yesterday catching up and reminiscing. Now it's time to get our families together. He's a mucky-muck with EDS here in Silicon Valley and has four kids. Also, I e-mailed Verona (DeWitt) Nicolson to see if she was still in Santa Cruz where I last saw her 5 or 10 years ago, only to learn that she's now in New Zealand! We have to drag her back stateside for the reunion. Dave Stephan is an exec. with Safeway up in the Seattle area, although he almost moved down this way last year, and I have to thank Mark Press for ...Expand for more
the incredible job he has done keeping in touch, not to mention getting our forthcoming reunion organized. Take care, all. College I loved Stanford University, so much so that I spent 9 years there! Frosh Year (74-4): Lived in Mirlo, then a 4 class, co-ed dorm. First roommate was John Toldi followed by Howard Yang. Threw myself into studies, getting straight A's for the first time in my life during Winter Quarter, and with a tough schedule to boot. Learned pincochle and foos ball. Soph Year (74-5): Lived off campus due to a bad housing lottery draw. Fall Qtr. with Howard and John in a house off campus with a mother and her daughter. Lived cheap ($8/week on food). Winter Qtr. in an apartment off El Camino with Howard and Randy Brummel(sp?). Declared Poli Sci and asked for Prof. Jim March as my advisor. Left Spring Qtr. to go work for Carnation to pay for the next year. Jr. Yr. (1975-76) Relegated to the trailers due to another bad housing lottery draw. Lived with Howard, Emmanuel Vacakis, and Bob Wenzlau. Volunteered at the Chinese Tea House. Threw myself into Course Guide, karate, rock concert security, campus politics. Dad passed away Winter Quarter, so took most of it off. Hung out at Flo Mo and friends like Steve Westly, Pat Flinn and Bill Koran. Sr. Yr. (1976-77) - Lived with Terry Phipps, high school sweetheart, in Escondido Village. Course Guide Project Manager, teaching evaluation, campus politics, etc. Elected co-student body president in Spring with Steve Westly, Anne Henkels & Glenn Jordan Sr. Yr. (1977-78) - Continued to live in Escondido with Terry and spent most of my time on ASSU. Great year. Actually graduated. Post Years (1978-1980) - Manager of the Tresidder Recreation Center. Repositioned old bowling alley into broader rec center with outdoor activities and video games. Supervised 20+ students. Doubled revenues & net income. Took flying lessons. Started dating, finally! Set up Advising Associates with Alison Ross and Dan Lessler. Post Years (1980-82) - Mentor Ellie Oppenheim promoted me to Assistant Director of Tresidder, supervising food services and retail ops. Remodelled cafeteria, turned Coffee House over to ASSU, and set up student run food services (e.g., Corner Pocket). Mom passed away. Lived with Claire Kelm. Finally broke away from Hoover Tower in June of 1982 to go work on Tom Bradley's first gubernatorial bid.
