Greg's Story

Life After graduating from Rio Linda, I attended UC Berkeley where I got a BS degree in chemistry in 1982. Roomed with fellow Rio Linda alumnus Gene Yee the first two years and Lance Lysinger joined us there after transferring from Sac State. Berkeley was an exhilarating experience, very challenging academically, eye-opening with respect to research opportunities in the sciences and socially really wild at times... many thanks to our RL teachers Mr. Conrad and Mr. Husing for steering us there. I met my wife to be, Lori Medlen from Santa Cruz at Berkeley, but we did not get together until several years after college. After Berkeley I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where I got a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry. This took forever, 9 years, on a very difficult project. I was working on molecular metal clusters containing from 15 to 50 metal atoms. We determined the atomic structure of these new materials and really addressed the question "How many metal atoms do you need in an aggregate before you have an entity that has the familiar properties of a metal?" By the time we got to 50 atoms, we were approaching, but still did not see metallic behavior. I learned a lot about obsession and failure at Wisconsin and how to persevere through the failures that one always encounters in exploratory research. Lori and I got together in 1986 in Madison, married in 1987 and our daughter Kara was born at the end of that year. Madison is a wonderful city, known as the "Mad City" and the "Berkeley of the midwest". It is the capitol of Wisconsin, liberal, beer everywhere - each little town has its own brewery, built on 4 lakes, the student union opens out onto one of the lakes and was the most popular place in Madison during the summer. Life was challenging with long hours in the lab, dirt poor on a research assistantship for a salary, having a baby, and the fact that I took so long to finish, we were lucky to survive this period. In 1991 after I graduated from UW, took...Expand for more
a job as a research chemist with Universal Oil Products (UOP)in Tarrytown, New York. We lived in White Plains, about 35 miles north of New York City. This was a wonderful time for us. Lori got a job working in the conference industry in the city and rode the 35 minutes on the train. It was great having glamorous NY nearby for the restaurants, shows and clubs. New York is also very beautiful, heavily forested, and there are mountains and beaches within a couple hours drive. At UOP, I was doing exploratory research in the field crystalline microporous inorganic materials called zeolites. The are basically quartz with pores, but because it is crystalline, thee is a repeating pattern of atoms and of the pores, so the pores are identically the same size. The pores are about the diameter of small molecules that are processed in the petroleum industry. The materials are used for separations as "molecular sieves" because some molecules fit in the pores and others do not. They are also used as mini-reactors where very specific chemistry is carried out on a molecule constrained in a pore. They are also used in air separation, as adsorbents that can clean up nuclear waste or have utility in dialysis. It is my job to identify new structures and applications for them, and then patent them. Enough about work. My son Kyle was born as we left New York in 1994 when I was transferred to Chicago. We all lived in Chicago until 1998 when Lori got a big promotion at the conference company and had to move back to New York. This started 7 years of a commuter marriage that ended with us selling our house and pooling all of our funds for Lori to start her own conference business based in Santa Cruz. The company started 2001 and has about 65 people now. My daughter Kara is 19 and a junior at UC Santa Barabara, where she just transferred after 2 years at SF State. She's a philosophy major. Kyle is 13, starting 8th grade, plays mean rock guitar and is a good pitcher. Nice to be back in CA!
