Greg's Story

Life It would take a book to share with you my whole bio, so I will do my best to hit some high points of the last 40 years or so! Most people would probably remember me as quiet and studious and maybe even shy, but also an achiever. I would say I am now much more confident, well-rounded, adaptable and outgoing than I used to be - but my basic personality is not totally different - I prefer a few friends to crowds of people, I frequently am a mediator and supporter of the "underdog", I like history, architecture, art, philosophy and spirituality as subjects, livened up with travel, a bit of politics and exercise and I do have an occasional adventurous streak. ( I once took a trip to Europe by myself, in 2005 I went to New Mexico to give my sister and niece a vacation, followed by two trips to Canada and a 2006 Santa Fe conference on 2012!) While appreciating cultural activities like seeing great art or hearing live music, visiting historic architectural sites or enjoying great cuisine, I can be just as appreciative of ordinary things like a walk on the beach or in the woods, old movies, good conversation, a home cooked meal, or pets and kids. (For example I loved visiting the Louvre and actually seeing the Mona Lisa, or enjoying a formal Thai dinner in Thailand with costumed performers, but also taking the ferry to Victoria, B.C. or just visiting a neighbor's family in Mexicali, Mexico) I think variety is important, although when it comes to getting a job done I can also be persistent where many people give up. After I left high school I had a full scholarship in Architecture at Washington U. in St. Louis for a year, then returned to O.S.U. to complete a degree in History (I couldn't get into the architecture program and have always liked history.) On graduation I spent 7 years in the U.S.A.F. and was in Texas, Illinois, California, Guam and Dover, Delaware from where I caught my hop to Europe and toured for 3 weeks in Germany, Holland, England, Wales and France before flying Avianca from Paris to Madrid and catching a hop back from a base there. (Having left active duty because of cutbacks after Vietnam) I then was in the Reserves for another 7 years still as an aircraft maintenance officer, in Dover and later Og...Expand for more
den, Utah. Besides what I learned by going through training and working with people and logistics management, some other highlights of that time included a trip to Alaska and flying on our C-130 around Mt. McKinley and two temporary assignments in Thailand where I really like the people and culture. After a break and then an additional near 7 years in the CA Air National Guard at Channel Islands (by Pt. Mugu NAS) I recently retired form the AF. Of course once I was off active duty, with or without other part-time AF commitments, I was looking for civilian work and must have had 20 jobs from working in a friend's job placement agency, to selling artwork door to door in Washington, D.C. (including to many K Street firms and by invitation to the FBI!), to finally ending up at an educational software company in San Diego and then until last year, working full time in a variety of jobs at the NewSchool of Architecture and Design where I still teach an introductory summer course and a San Diego architecture history class twice yearly. Along the way I have had many blessings as well as challenges, and while attending three of our high school reunions, have not really stayed in touch with many people. It was interesting though that after realizing Tom Carper who used to sit behind me in English class (now a US Senator ) was Governor of Delaware, I encouraged him to attend the 35th reunion and he sat at the same table; I also reconnected with Kay (Pattison)Meister , Dave Omerod, and Patty (Littlejohn) Klemans as well as seeing many others from John Raab to Bill Logan. I am now active as chair of my HOA, and an arts/architecture non-profit at school as well as secretary of my church board, looking for what to do next as I continue teaching and other part time work. Rather than edit the above, I will just add that now I am in Savage, MN because my mom is here and I was ready to sell my condo in San Diego, though I go back once or twice a year for a visit. I am helping her out, saving money, working part-time and taking Design courses at a local college with VA benefits. Enjoyed going to the 50th reunion, wishing I had stayed in touch with more people as I moved around over the years. Also, you can check my Facebook page.
