Greg's Story

Life Dad was in the Military, so I've gone to a lot of different schools. I finished HS in Virgina. I decided to go to the Naval Academy and ended up spending a year before getting in at USC living next door to David Lawson of all people. Managed to graduate from the Academy in 89 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I drove ships for about 6 years including one based in Charleston. I finally switched to the Navy's Civil Engineering Corps and am now station in Yokosuka, Japan. I got married in 1994 and we had a little girl last year who looks a lot like her daddy. Prior to moving to Japan, I got my Masters in Construction Management from VA Tech. I was last in town summer of 2000. I nearly got electricuted while sailing off of James Island with my friend Chris Stanton (Sville 85). Life is different in Japan, but Texas is different too. We are back in the states after 3 years and now have two kids. College One year at USC, Mechanical Engineering and NROTC. Lived in Douglass Tower 3rd Floor. Got accepted to the Naval Academy, so started all over, which was a good thing. Getting up for morning class was always a challenge. USNA89: 22nd Company during Plebe year living on 2-1. Then last 3 years in 7th Company over on 5-0. After failing out of Electrical Engineering, managed to survive Mechanical Engineering. Was a member of the Off Shore Sailing Team and did the Newport to Bermuda Race in 1986. 49 footers. Also had a radio show on Sunday Nights at WRNV down in the basement of 8th wing. The Rock and Roll Root cellar with Doug Necratz (sp?). vo and then moved to 1st LT. Met my wife two weeks after she had been aboard for a Ship Check on our distributed damage control lockers. She worked for NAVSEA at the time. She remembered me because I was looking for the CHENG to get a man aloft chit signed off. 1993-1995 Amphibious Squadron 4 as Asst Ops and Ship to Shore Movement officer. This was definitely my best SWO tour. Did lots of cool real world ops. Was liason officer to the JTF in Somalia, Planned the amphibious landing in Haiti, although we got relieved as the Ready ARG just before it occured. 1995 Switch over the the Civil Engineer Corps. 1995-1997 PWC San Diego. Started in Flag Housing until my father moved into Flag Housing, and then was moved to Zone 2 at 32nd Street. 1997-1999 Engineering Field Division Southwest. AROICC Asst Resident Officer in Charge of Construction at 32nd Street. Covered the Dry side, Balboa Hospital and housing projects south of interstate 8. 2000 Va Tech to get my Masters in Construction Management 2001-2004 ROICC Yokosuka/PWC Japan. My CO wore three hats, so all the CEC worked for him. I was the Resident Officer in Charge of Construction, so I did all the Navy funded construction and services in and around Yokosuka, Yokohama and Tokyo. Very interesting since most of my people were Japanese Nationals. You learn patience and trust. Lots of meetings were contract and technical issues were hammered out in front of me in Japanese and then get the translation "It's O.K. then understand". 2004-present: Asked for DC and they sent me to Corpus Christi, TX as the Public Works Officer. Vintage 1940's base, no people and no money. I'm also ADDU to the Engineering Field Division in Charleston, SC as the Officer in Charge of Construction South Texas. In a recent change, I also am responsible for Maintenance at five reserve centers spread from Houston, tX to Albequerke, NM.
