Arthur's Story
Life
I'm a little over eighty an octogenarian traveling down the freeway of life above the speed limit and am beginning to experience what it feels like to be called "Sir" by Policemen, Paramedics and Waitresses also I'm getting about ten percent deducted from some of my meals without even asking so I think I'm headed in the right direction!
By the time I'm eighty I'll expect 20% and after that... Who knows? Maybe it'll be free!
Being a native of Redlands CA, living here has taught me a great deal...
Family and historic preservation are very important to me. I live in a community where i can meet fellow classmates that I had in High School or people who knew my grandparents and father, sister and brother.
I lost my father in 2004 and giving his eulogy caused me to really ponder on the importance of my family over the years.
I did have the calcium buildup on my great grandfather's memorial stone cleaned off... It's beautiful and kind of radiates. It's the most beautiful and notable marker in the area where it is...He passed on in 1907 and that old red stone has been there now over a hundred years. I know my Dad also was very interested in his grandfatehr so he would have definitely approved of my cleaning that tombstone. My Dad had asked me to check notices about his grandfather in the old newspapers in the library archives and while there was some mention it was not detailed.
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent the treatment a few years ago.. After having radiated pellets implanted in well I'd rather not say on a public forum... I was entering and leaving Barnes and Noble and set off all the alarms.. and youngish man appeared from no where and I think wanted to do a cavity search to see if I had secreted some books somewhere...like at the airport.. but I told him about the radiation and he backed off!
As a Baha'i I have also grown spiritually over the years.. Observe the fast when I can but not all the time and have kept in contact with many Baha'is I've known over the past thirty or so years. My wife and children are still Baha'is and having a Baha'i family is a wonderful thing.
Baha'is are a friendly lot and so important when facing trials that we do in life.
Workplace
My career in Social Work began in 1965 on graduating from the University of Redlands. Originally, I prepared to enter teaching but my ideas at the time were a little too "radical" for the school system ( I found that the grading system was antithetical to education) so I found employment in an area that was open and available, that is the field of Social Work in San Bernardino County, later I went to the Graduate School of Social Work at San Diego State College.
I graduated in 1971 and began work at the Family Service Agency in Riverside, California.... in a few years I transferred to Hemet Valley Hospital Psychiatric Unit. The therapies I championed did not work well in that environment so I later worked for the Inland Counties Regional Center. I had a team of ...Expand for more
Community Service Aides and saw that disabled youth and adults received services. I was involved in this for about four years.
Still later i began a twenty one year career in mostly Childrens Services with Riverside County DPSS... I had experiences supervising Children and Adult Services and later carried a specialized caseload in child abuse cases and worked with the Juvenile Court until my retirement in 1997 after which I worked part-time for a few years.
Over all I would say my employment was often a frustrating experience as the ostensible aims of dealing with the issues of poverty often clashed with conservative agency politics and the increasingly right-wing ideology that was taking hold of society since the early sixties. The "safety nets" and rights conferred by the Social Security Act were being eroded.
But the value of my relationships formed with co-workers and the people I served was worth more than mere gold.
My work experience is still a valued commodity but I choose where to use it in volunteer work and service to the community.
One thing though that occurs to me is that one has to make choices and priorities as life moves along..since none of us will live forever the choice of what we do each day comes down to the quality of life we live and how we can improve or support the advancemnet of human consciousness.
Military
I began my Reserve Training quite early at the age of seventeen in 1957 with the consent of my father who was also my Commanding Officer... in a year I had my six months training at San Diego Recruit Depot and Camp Pendleton.
Nothing much occurred except helping fight a brush fire in San Clemente in 1958. There was also the "Labanese Crisis" in which Marines were ordered by President Eisenhower to land on the beaches on Labanon, but I later learned the ice cream vendors welcomed the Marines on the beaches there and the only casualty sadly was a Marine who forgot their password. We were told we could be sent to Labanon and this terrified many of us. I night you could hear the beads and prayers of many Catholic Marines.
During training one Marine lost his eye while cleaning his rifle (He was our best Sharpshooter/Marksman), another got a fungus on his feet from not changing his boots... another wet the bed (rack) and all these Marines were discharged.
A fine looking young man who was healthy and our Guidon Bearer was tested and found to have too low an IQ and so was demoted.
During flame thrower training I (and the entire platoon) witnessed a Marine engulfed in flames as he let loose the front grip of his flame thrower. It had gotten too hot.
Several returned from liberty in Tijuana with venereal disease after being warned of the risks and there were some incidents of brutality by a drunken Drill Instructor who was later promoted over the entire Recruit Training in San Diego.
All in all I'd say I was pretty fortunate to have gotten through training intact and whole. A few years later I requested to be discharged from service.
