Gregory's Story

Rev. Gregory Thomas was born February 27, 1959. He is the eldest child of Rev. Ervin Thomas and Bertha Thomas of Savannah, GA. Rev. Thomas grew up in the West Savannah community. He attended Bartow Elementary School, Scott Jr. High School, and graduated in 1977 from Tompkins High School, Savannah, GA. Rev. Thomas Attended Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee AL, Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, AL, Gadsden State College, Gadsden, AL. He Studied Religion at Chaminade University of Honolulu, Hawaii. He is a 1996 graduate of Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA. where He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Justice Studies. He attended the Baptist Extension Courses at Georgia Southern where he received all A¿s in the book of Amos, The teachings of Christ, How to teach the Bible, The book of Romans, The Book of Exodus, and Marriage and Family Counseling. Rev. Thomas actively supports and attends Sunday School. He is an Anointed Teacher of the Bible. He faithfully attends training as possible. He attends and supports the work of the National Baptist Convention USA INC. as a Delegate. He also attends and supports the work of the General Missionary Baptist Convention of GA. He is a Member of the Moderator¿s Auxiliary of the National Baptist Convention USA INC. He is a Member of the Moderator¿s Department of the General Missionary Baptist Convention of GA. He attends and teaches workshops in the Queen of Victory Missionary Baptist Association. He Teaches Bible Study and often Sunday School. At age 50 he recently recieved his masters of Public Administration degree from Columbus State University. Rev. Gregory Thomas served as interim Pastor of St. Luke Independent Methodist Church, where He led the Church upon the death of their Pastor He was latter called to Pastor the Church. Many members were added to the church. Bible Study was implemented. The Church structure was renovated enlarged and bricked in. He resigned in September 1997 to make Himself available for a struggling rural Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, of Stilson GA. Many Members had left the church and the structure conditions were dilapidated. In November of 1997 The Members of Gethsemane Baptist Church called Rev. Thomas as Pastor. The church added running water in-door restrooms and over the years has been completely renovated. Many old and new members have joined the Church. Many had claimed that the Church was gone and the doors should close but Rev. Thomas is a believer that God will provide. He inspired the Members and much was accomplished during his administration. In February 2000 Rev. Thomas was called to serve as Interim Pastor of Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church of Statesboro, GA. Upon the death of their Pastor, Rev. Dr. R.A. y Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. for bible study. Rev. Thomas currently serves as Pastor of Spring Hill Baptist Church in Statesboro GA. (1st & 3rd Sunday10:15 a.m.) Gethsemane Baptist Church Stilson, Georgia (2nd Sunday at 10:15 a.m. & 4th Sunday at 8:00 a.m.). January, 1997 he was elected to serve as Vice Moderator of the Queen of Victory Missionary Baptist Association where He is also the President of the Sunday School and BTU Convention. He is the founder of the Stilson Holydays Union in which the three Baptist Churches in Stilson host joint worship services on each major holiday (Easter, Christmas, New Years Eve, and Thanksgiving). Rev. Thomas is married to the Honorable Letrell L. Thomas (former Candler County Commissioner district one and President of the Candler County Branch of the NAACP). He has four daughters Shemeka of the University of Maryland and Tammie of Upper Marlboro, Md. Janice and Jada of Metter, GA. He has two grandsons Jeremiah & Jonathan of Upper Marlboro, MD. Rev. Thomas currently is serving his second term (Started Jan. 02) as City Councilman on the Metter City Council. He is an active voice in the community, and Past Vice President of the Candler County Branch of the NAACP. Member of the S.C.L.C. Rev. Thomas is a 10 and ½ year veteran of the US Army Military Police Corps and former Drill Sergeant. He faithfully served on numerous security details for Presidents Reagan and Carter, and numerous Kings, Queens, and foreign Heads of State. Rev. Gregory Thomas is one who has answered the Masters call and often challenge others to pick up their cross and follow Christ. He loves helping mankind. He has received numerous awards and honors. Rev. Thomas is employed by the Georgia Department of Corrections, at Coastal State Prison, where he serves as the Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment. He oversees the work of 8 Unit Managers & 158 employees and Contract staff of the Medical Department, Mental Health Department, Dental Clinic, Counseling Services, Diagnostics, Education Department, Library Services, Recreation, Records, and Chaplaincy. He also serves as staff Education Advisor. Periodically Rev. Thomas attends the worship service in the Prison and on occasion preaches the liberating Gospel of Jesus Christ. Many souls have been led to Christ on one occasion 48 souls came only 8 were ever Baptized prior. Rev. Thomas believes that Christ is the answer to many of our problems in life. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment: Coastal State Prison, Garden City, GA, September 2002 - Present Coordinate all Care and Treatment functions in a Close Security Prison. Manage the day-to-day activities and functions of the Care and Treatment department. Assist and provide Consultation to the Warden in the overall operation, management, and direction of a 1520 inmate bed prison. Serves as Staff Education Advisor, Employee Assistance
