Gregory's Story
Life
I've been a traditionally ordained Buddhist monk, "bhikshu", for over 30 years. I teach one-year survey courses in World Religions and Buddhist Studies, as well as US Government & Meditation to 10th-12th graders in our high school. I also serve as the school's guidance counselor (titled as "core teacher") for 9-12th graders. We are one of the few fully accredited Buddhist high schools in the U.S. I am also involved in the translation of Ancient Buddhist Chinese Sacred Texts (Sutras). I live in a very large monastic community in Northern California (Mendocino County) called the City of 10,000 Buddhas. The resident community consists of about 80 nuns, 25 monks, and 100-150 family people- the majority of which are Chinese Ame...Expand for more
ricans and immigrant Chinese from many different countries. The grounds of the City consists of several hundred acres with over 50 institutional buildings. The City includes an elementary school, high school, a university, and a translation institute, amongst several other facitlities. If any of my old friends from Chicago are ever in the area, please stop by and I'd be happy to give you a tour of the City of 10,000 Buddhas. My monastic name is Heng Shun æÂÂé Â(pronounced "shoon").
College
I received a Master's Degree in Buddhist Studies and Practice from Dharma Realm Buddhist University, specializing in the translation of Ancient Buddhist Chinese Sutras (4th-9th century Buddhist Chinese), especially the Avatamsaka Sutra.
