Gregory's Story

Life Im at myspace or facebook under gmyatko if you want to say hi. Well, the journey so far has been pretty exciting; right after high school ended in the summer of '74, my little brother Donnie asked me to go for a bike ride on the canal towpath. He was quite a bit younger than me, and we didn't have much of a connection, until that day....we LOVED riding to Freemansburg and back. The next day, I did it again, and the next day, and the day after that. But he couldn't, because his leg hurt......I immediately quit smoking, and the next thing I knew, I was walking and running to work each day. That same fateful day that my little brother started me bike riding, he never rode again. His leg hurt too much.....and it never stopped hurting. 'till the doctor's got done analyzing his problem for 5 months, once even suggesting that his pain was psychological, he was diagnosed with cancer. He had a tumor the size of a grapefruit where his spine met his hip. Talk about a rude awakening....up until that point, when he changed my life with a simple bike ride, I hadn't a care in the world. Then, as I grew stronger every day, over the ensuing years, racing bicycles, running races, bicycle AND running races (duathlons) he was slowly dying, losing his battle with cancer 5 years after at age 18. There was nothing I could do for him, other than always be cheering him up, doing things with him that he COULD do. At one point, he was in remission, and started lifting weights, running and biking. Man could he run. He told me he his goal was to kick my butt, and I thought it...Expand for more
was entirely possible.....but it wasn't to be. His cancer returned, this time the cell lodged in the base of his brain, and he passed away and I buried him on Valentine's day in 1983. It snowed like heck that day, and he and I LOVED snow...........So not only did he get me to change my behaviors, he started a fire in me that first day on the bike. I went from this "give a crap" attitude at 18, to going to college, graduating on the Deans list, and getting a job as an Engineer at AT&T. I closed out my 20+ years with Agere Systems in Orlando, Fl. as a Senior Member of Technical Staff, living in Clermont, Fl. for seven years, with my wonderful wife, Susan, of 21 years, and two great kids, Lauren, who is getting married this fall, and Eric, one of the strongest youth triathletes in the U.S. So I'm riding and running, x-c skiing, and skating for over 32 years now, slowing down considerably, but still pretty strong on the bike, and we're living out here in Chandler, Az., where I got a great engineering job with Intel Corp., as a Senior Photolithography Engineer, which I've been doing since 1982. I still get up almost every day with my son, and we bike 20 miles daily during the week, and run and swim in the afternoons and go for a long ride in the Arizona mountainsides on the weekend, or find a race somewhere. So I guess except for my little brother's death in 1983, which was the greatest sorrow I will ever feel, life has been very good. I think I've tried to live for him too, since he turned my life around. So, yea, its been a good ride so far.....
