I arrived at Carthay in the 3rd Grade and immediatly became the boyfriend of Rhonda Leninfeld. When her parents met me at her birthday party held at Shakey's and found out I was black, she called off the whole relationship. Whatever, I only wanted to hook up with her because she was popular anyway- but it was my first taste of racism. My real crush was on Marilyn Thorn a beautiful sister was really into modern dance (in the 3rd grade, can you believe it?) but Marilyn had a crush on Dedric because he had a bigger afro than me. Then by the 5th grade it was all about Carol Douglas who became my girlfriend until graduation.
Teachers like Mr. Bucholtz, Ms. Mayor (Mrs. Rodriquez), and Mrs. Blatt helped give me the power to reach for my goals in life with confidence.
I wonder if the black and white reel to reel video tape our 6th grade presentation of "Oliver" that Mrs. Blatt's son recorded still exists? What are the chances of that huh?

Mark Ritz and a few others in the 4th grade. Yes, the Urban Society, who would meet and fight with other "crews" at 3 o'clock either on the front grass, in the tunnel, or one of the islands on San Vicente. Meet, greet, and fight. And I still have some of the comics we drew since 3rd Grade.
