Gregory's Story
Life
I raised my boys telling them, "You're becoming what you are going to be. If you don't practice now, then you won't be what you're supposed to be when you get there" Their mother distained my philosopy but now every time they open their mouths she has to declare, "You sound just like your Daddy!" Chattanooga, Tennessee was a beautiful place to rear those Southern gentlemen.
School
My extracirricular activity with the Saint Paul Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps from 1964 through 1968 occupied a good deal of my time. That activity had a distinctly positive influence on my behavior as an adolescent. Victoria Kalfka was an underclassmember, and to date I have not been able to thank her for the memory of her priceless smile. As overly attractive as she was, and as shy as I was, all I could do was to imagine that she would have given me an audience. Nancy Clark probably does not remember us making out in the front seat of a classmate's car as a group of us were joy riding one evening. As more memories come back I will add to this. I am one grateful guy that I tended always to err on the side of relational restraint. The woman that I was faithful to until and through 25 years of marriage is the only one who was any suspicions about my fidelity; but then whose fault is it that I married a southerner in order to perpetuate the civil war?
Workplace
What did I not do to make ends meet while my ex and I recreated the Civil War? It took twenty-five years for her to delcare herself the winner! The sub-cultural conflict never went away either. Work almost always had a sense of warfare about it. I bore the pain of relating to one woman long enough to mature and she didn't like the finished product. Oh, well. She still inspires me to write and...Expand for more
to re-lyricize songs. If she heard me declare my inspirational indebtedness to her, she would probably say, "Write the check"! By all standards, and by comparison to my siblings, I am so far a financial failure. None of them married outside their sub-culture or lived outside the state lines - except for brother Geoffrey who, as a Marine, was stationed at Iwakuni, Japan while I was in Southeast Asia. Why did I not take an R&R to see him? I believe that the two redneck sons have embraced my work ethic. Isn't that a scary thought? My ephitaph must necessary attest to the fact that I neither controlled in order to succeed, nor did I succeed in order to control. Many a male has compromised himself in order to succeed. Conversely, I have made every attempt to succeed at not compromising myself.
Military
Who could have convinced me that thirteen years after being released from the active duty Navy I would be recruited back into the reserves in '86. My ex, the Southern Belle, looked at me cross-eyed and asked, "What are you doing!?" My response was that I was going to have fun. That was unauthorized as far as she was concerned. So was the cruise around South America in '96 after the boys had left the nest. I thought that it would be my last hoorah. Yeah, right! Upon returning from the UNITAS cruise came the declaration that I had been UA and that was grounds for me to get fired. The divorce was final in the fall of '98 and I moved back to JAX, my old homeport. There I was part of Naval Coastal Warfare. The Inshore Boat Unit out of the sub base at Kings Bay, GA, was on active duty the entire year '02. I determined to escape the South after that tour and retired in December at the reserve center in Minneapolis, MN. WHAT A RIDE!!
