Gustavo's Story

I always thought of myself as such a geek in high school. I never felt like I really fit in and I was always so angry. I didn't fit in with the nerds or the jocks, so I guess I tried my hardest to not fit in to anything. I was trying to be me, but I had issues with that too. It's difficult being gay during the wonderful conservative years of the 1980's. Now don't get me wrong. Quite a few people out there threated me very well and didn't care if I was gay, bi or str8. I can see now how some of the guys would be put off by this, but trust me everyone, I was at school to get an education-not a boyfriend(although that would have been an added bonus, but I digress). In 1989 we graduated and I continued my education at Kings River Community College(now Reedley College). I continued to major in accounting and in 1993 I graduated with an Associate of Science Degree in Accounting. I could have continued on to Fresno State, but after so many years of school, I needed a break and, for me, school ended. I never found a boyfriend in college. But that's alright, life goes on. After college I put my accounting degree to work and got various jobs in the accounting field. After the owners closed down their business due to divorce, I got a job at the Selma Walmart where I worked overnight for four years. In 2001, I left Walmart to work for Fresno County. And that brings us current. I'm still working for the county 8+ years and I love it. Great pay, great benefits and great friends. So there in a nutshell, you have it. Well, almost all of it, keep reading. What I've learned through all of this is that in college, I was looking for a boyfriend. Now, I'm older and wiser and I th...Expand for more
ink all along what I was really searching for was a soul mate and someone to love. This hasn't happened yet, and that's okay. Love will come to me when I'm ready to receive it. Times have changed in the last 20 years since we were in High School. Being gay or bi is more acceptable now that it was when we were in school. But for all the guys out there, no I didn't have a crush on anyone in high school. That would have complicated things way too much. So, keep reading. What I do remember about high school is in my senior year, I tutored Mike Hagerty for Engligh. It was once, but I remember because I see him on TV from time to time. Mike, hope all is well. I remember some other close friends I want to mention here: Jermey winter, Alan Reese, Dianna Crouch (Kelley), Arthur and Armando Reyes. I remember you all fondly. I also wanna give a special shout out to Phil Pipkin. I only knew him my senior year form English class, but he joined the military after the 2001 attacks. I have nothing but respect for men and women who protect us each and every single day. You're making my world safer and it is appreciated. I went to elementary, junior high and high school with Karen Garcia. R.I.P Karen, I have fond memories. So there you have it my life up to date. If you have any questions, or comments, ask me. Hell, we're not 16, 17 or 18 anymore. Just ask. Who knows, my answer might surprise you. In high school, we ate alot. We studied alot. We laughed alot. We ate alot. We worked alot. We ate alot. What happens here is life. Just becuase you have some tough times, doesn't mean you throw in the towle. You go on living--and eating. Take care all. Gus
