CLAIM TO FAME:
The "Original Animal Cop"
Established the Nation's First Animal Cruelty Law Enforcement Division in 1978. Now, every time you see one of those Animal Cop Shows on TV, you will know that I began the whole thing almost Forty years ago. At the height of my division's popularity, we were flooded with calls from all over the United States, asking advice on cases, how we were using laws, both criminal and civil, and how to start Law Enforcement divisions within different departments to investigate and prosecute cases of animal cruelty. We were also the first to bring news reporters and cameras along on our raids on dogfights, cockfights, abused horse cases and cases of serial animal murders. We caught a lot of flack for that and I spoke to many departments on why we felt it necessary to bring the media along. At the time, Police departments were fearful that an officer might screw up and it would be on tape forever. (This was long before dashboard cams) My take was, that it was worth the risk to bring awareness of abuse against animals to the public, as well as document the cases on film. These news stories became very popular to the viewing public. To the point that reporters and TV assignment editors were calling daily ...Expand for more
asking what we were doing that day and even calling us with tips the public had called in to them and asking could they could go along and report the story. Another criticism we received in the beginning was why would we spend time on crimes against animals when crimes against humans were deemed far more serious. My answer, if you spend time studying violent assaults and the backgrounds of the most noted serial killers, you will find in most of them a history of animal abuse. Jeffrey Dahmer is a prime example. Even Albert DeSalvo, "The Boston Strangler" used to trap cats and dogs and viciously kill them. If we stopped one future Dahmer or DeSalvo or countless others, all of us are a lot better off.
Today, it is common practice to bring the media along for the ride. Remember, we were doing it over 40 years ago. We were the grandfather of "COPS" and the many subsequent Police reality shows. Our largest and most famous case involved the deaths of over 2,000 starving horses in Texas in a "get rich" scheme, raising horses for the overseas food markets, This scheme backfired on several ranchers and politicians when they were hit by a severe winter and didn't want to buy feed for the disaster. Dead horses covered the white snow over several miles.
All this can be documented in national newspaper coverages including the New York Times, national magazines along with the national nightly news.
Fortunately, I have many hours of TV news footage and newspaper articles of our cases that will help explain to my grandchildren and great-grandchildren who their "Pa Pa" was. Long after all the awards and accomplishments, my family will be my greatest legacy.
