Gwendolyn's Story
Life
I have been a speech-language pathologist for 30 years in the public schools. I retired on June 2, 2004. I am presently working very part-time for the local school system. My husband teaches social studies and science at a regional youth detention center. We reside in Claxton, Georgia. Our hobbies are making wood arts and crafts for the yard and home. We have two grown children. Our 25 year old son passed away on January 3, 2004 in a car accident. He completed military service in the navy and lived in Homerville, Georgia. Our daughter is 24 years old, married, and has one 3 year old daughter. She lives in Thomasville, GA and works at Thomasville Toyota.
School
I went to Franklin Elementary from Kindergarten through 6th grade. I think the wildest year was in the 5th grade when I had Mr. Clemens as a teacher. I went to Clark Jr. High in the 7th and 8th grades. I enjoyed my involvement in the band. I spent only my 9th and 10th grade years at Lincoln High. I remember the cheering for the sporting events especially basketball the most. During my 11th and 12th grade years I moved to Carmel. We again had a wonderful band and a successful basketball team. I fondly remember going to state in basketball...Expand for more
four years in a row during my high school years.
College
My college years at BSU were among my best memories. I met life long friends and had the opportunity to enter study in a field that has given me many challenges and has been extremely rewarding. I also met my husband during my first year at BSU while residing in the dorm. We met in Biology Lab! We also ran into each other in my dorm when he delivered pizzas. It was love at first sight!
Workplace
I have been very fortunate in my career. I have worked for 30 years as a speech-language pathologist in the public schools in Georgia. I spent my first year establishing a hearing impaired program in four southeast counties in Georgia. During my 2nd-4th years, I began a speech therapy program in the Ware County Schools in Waycross, GA. The only drawback I encountered was the different dialects spoken in south Georgia. I have spent the last 25 years working in the Claxton, GA schools. I have been extremely blessed. I began as the only speech therapist in the school system. We now have three full time speech pathologists to serve three schools! The school system even employs me on a part-time basis now that I have retired. It's the best of both worlds!
