Hal's Story

After school, made a career of the U.S. Navy. Was an inflight electronics tech., three tours in Vietnam, ditched between Guam and P.I. in 1967, shot down while resupplying Marines in 1968 in HU-1 helicopter. I am very lucky to have survived two plane crashes... Retired as a Chief in 1983 while in Okinawa, Japan. (see pictures) After working for a DOD contractor, I went back to college taking electronics engineering and computer science courses at De Anza College in Cupertino, CA. Worked as a contract Mission Controller for Pioneer Deep Space Project at N...Expand for more
ASA Ames Research Ctr. for three and one half years. Controlled three spacecraft on a daily basis. While I was there, we were the only American spacecraft (Pioneer 12 which orbited Venus) to have a close view of the comet. Pioneer 10 was the first man made object to pass beyond Pluto's orbit. In 1989, moved with my wife, Sue, to Nebraska to be near her family, and we raised our two youngest kids in Lincoln. Now all our children AND grandchildren live in California, so it's just me, mom and the cat! Looking forward to attending the 50th reunion...Way cool!
