Hal's Story

Wow, How do you start a task like this? I guess you just have to be honest, and let the chips fall where they may. I went to a lot of different schools when I was young. I was in reform school from age nine to almost age fourteen. After that I was lucky enough to meet Elliot Galloway and go to the school named for him. I met some nice people at Galloway, and many others as well! However I was still very pissed off from being locked away for so long. I also didn't fit in there very well. So I only stayed through the tenth grade. I went to Northside to get a fresh start (great move) after the tenth grade. It did me a world of good. I am sure most of the people at Galloway were pleased to see me go as well! I really enjoyed my time a NHS. I probably should have gone to Northside after the eighth grade. I met some wonderful people and I am grateful for the experience.I am proud of how well so many have done in their lives. I enjoyed very much, living vicariously watching the amazing success of so many of my friends and classmates. I spent way too long avoiding any attempts at personal growth, and somehow I didn't die (many people told me I wouldn't make 21). Mr. Rudolph told my parents that I was a decent kid, but I wouldn't grow up until my mid-thirties. Looking back at things, he was dead on! I didn't really take full advantage of the academic opportunities I was offered. I did ...Expand for more
manage to get an associate's degree. I also went back to college in my thirties and carried a 4.0 GPA, before I needed to earn more money for school. But as John Lennon said, ¿Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans¿. I had a series of jobs, from managing a photo studio, driving a limousine, to bouncing off and on for 22 years, and eventually becoming a manager of a "Gentlemen's Club". I got married to a very decent woman and had a family. I find that to be amazing (considering some of the bridge trolls I dated). I quit the nightclub industry after I got married, and started a small business. I have enjoyed a modicum of success, and I am grateful. I used to enjoy the nightlife, but now most of my time is spent taking care of my family. I am kind of boring now, I suppose. I would have never imagined I would think that about myself, but c'est la vie. I miss the care-free days of Northside, but I was way too immature and should have been more focused. I am proud of so many of you out there who were pursuing their dreams with such vigor. I am happy for those who were able to attain the success they worked so hard to achieve. I also am impressed by those who have chosen to serve our Country and community. Additionally, I am saddened by the eternal loss of some of those we graduated with, Like Keith Davis, Richard Soloff, Greg Smith, Dennis Carder and Horatius Padmore.
