Judy's Story

Life After I left PA in '59, I went to UW one year, got married in 1961 in Coupeville & had two children, then moved to Ohio in 1964, when my husband got out of the Navy. I lived in Canton, Ohio, until 1981 (no mountains and no ocean <:() but I survived). I kept my married name of Brothers after the divorce & moved to the Washington, D.C. area (closer to the ocean and mountains) where my parents were then living. I went back to school to become a computer programmer/system analyst. Vacations were spent at my time share in Cancun. I met my second husband while living there, & we were married in 1988 after we moved to Boulder, Colorado (Ahhh, mountains again! but a long way from the ocean.) That's when I became a Beaver. I loved Boulder & thought I would stay there forever. I was certainly in the best physical shape I've ever been in what with all the hiking up mountains & cross country skiing we did. After the second divorce & deciding Boulder wasn't big enough for both of us, I kept the name Beaver, moved to Wilmington, N.C., where my parents had retired, & I went back to school again, this time to become a medical transcriptionist. I started my own business there, decided I didn't like the hot humid summers & the hurricanes (even with the ocean and living in a house on the inland waterway and mountains about a two-hour drive away), & moved to Santa Barbara, California (with mountains, ocean. & a warm climate <:). I lived there for 11 years, running my own business; then I went on the vacation trip of a lifetime in June of this year to celebrate having made it to 65 and 8 months so my Social Security kicked in. A friend & I jumped into my brand new screamin' yellow Ford Focus & headed up the coast on Route 1, taking our time travelling to Vancouver, B.C. where we took the Rocky Mountaineer train to places like Lake Louise, Jasper, & Banff. WOW! On the way to Vancouver, we stopped in Sequim so I could show Beverly what I had discovered in 2004 when I came back to Port...Expand for more
Angeles for our 45th class reunion - a small town near mountains & ocean with a mild climate, lots of amenities, & affordable housing. (The average home price in Santa Barbara was over $1 million when I left & unfortunately I hadn't gotten there in time to be able to afford to buy anything so I'm not one of those rich Californians who is building a huge house on California Hill (used to be Bell's Hill as I recall). Long story short, I ended up opening escrow on a manufactured home in a 55 & over park. We continued our trip through Canada (including a three-day stop at the Calgary Stampede), then back to the states into Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, the Tetons, Cheyenne, Rocky Mountain National Park, the Colorado mountains, & Las Vegas. When I got back to Santa Barbara on July 25 (one month after opening escrow), I got financing, my work, movers, etc. arranged, closed escrow on August 15th, said goodby to friends, & left on August 28th, arriving in Sequim on August 31st after driving up I-5 at a not so leisurely pace this time. During the past almost 50 years, I have raised two children, a son and a daugther, & I now have six grandchildren & two great-grandchildren. I don't know how I got old enough to be a great-grandmother, because I'm still only 18 on the inside, but the facts are the facts. I'm still getting settled (unpacking boxes and finding places to put the accumulation of a lifetime), but I'm taking plenty of time to explore the area. So far, I've been to Cape Flattery, the rain forest, and Lake Crescent twice. I've even braved the Seattle traffic to take my friend, Kate, who drove up with me this time, to SeaTac. I've had enough traveling in the past 25+ years - Greece, Ireland, Alaska, & London as well as 10 years of vacationing in Mexico & my special trip this summer - we travelled over 7,100 miles by car and train - so I'll be around. I'm still working part-time; I can't imagine myself fully retired. I love my work & Sequim. Oh, my name is now Joy.
