Richard's Story
I attended the University of Illinois for my undergraduate work, first in Chicago at Navy Pier and later at Champaign-Urbana. One summer, I worked as a mail clerk for a law firm in downtown Chicago (Pope, Ballard, Uriell, Kennedy, Shepherd & Fowle) and I decided to become a lawyer.
After a Bachelors Degree in Political Science, I received a J.D in 1967 from the University of Illinois College of Law.
After graduation, I met my future wife, Ginnie in Palatine, Illinois, took up flying and moved to Rockford, Illinois to practice law with Williams, McCarthy, Kinley, Rudy & Picha. I married Ginnie in October 1969 on a Saturday and tried my first jury trial on Monday. That first year I tried seven jury trials. I stayed at the firm for 20 years, as a trial lawyer.
During that period, I began slowly to do some trial work for a then small insurance company based in Rockford, Pioneer Life Insurance Company. Before long, the company grew into a national organization, went public in 1986 and was listed on the NYSE as PFS. I was privileged to be a member of the Board of Directors from 1986 to 1996, a period of rapid growth. At one time, I was c...Expand for more
orporate secretary and Chairman of the Audit Committee. As well, I supervised all of the company's litigation around the U.S.
In 1989, I left my old firm to start my own firm, "Haldeman & Associates," a firm specializing in litigation and litigation management. I have a sign that records my trial lawyer's ethic:
REMEMBER, IT'S NOT WHETHER YOU WIN OR LOSE THAT COUNTS, IT'S WHETHER I WIN.
Ginnie and I have two children, Jennifer and Kevin, both of whom graduated from college, married, and are now parents. I have four grandchildren, Madison, Hailey, Sydney and Austin.
I retired in 2004. My interest in flying has never diminished. I own a 1979 Cessna Skylane (N42RH) and a 1946 Aeronca Champ (N83729) and live on an airport community in Poplar Grove, Illinois (C77) during the summer months and in a golf community in southwest Florida (Grandezza) during most of the year; thus we are true "snowbirds" as we fly south for the winter and north for the summer. I've flown to Alaska along the AlCan Highway twice, as well as California, Texas, Arizona, Washington, Massachusetts and the Bahamas.
