Darrell's Story
In High School I was not sure what I wanted to do. So, I hung out with Eddy and we partied quite a bit. I met a nice girl from Gladstone that I was crazy about and she broke my heart. After high school I worked in a factory in Milwaukee, bought a decked-out van, traveled to Mexico with Jim, saw Echo in Las Vegas, came home, sold the van, quit the job and went to Oregon State. I wanted to learn how to manage resorts and travel to exotic places, meet beautiful women and make a lot of money. I joined the Theta Chi Fraternity, partied quite a bit, and was a roommate to my best friends Mark and Frosty. Frosty was a cheerleader and I became the mascot Benny Beaver. We traveled with the teams and partied quite a bit.
My first experience was with the Hyatt Hotel Embarcadero in San Francisco. I lived on Russian Hill at the corner of Union and Hyde. I had a small flat and life was perfect. I was young, making nice money and in San Francisco, a city with the most beautiful women in the world. A few years later I moved south to Orange County California, Huntington Beach to be precise. There I discovered the world of the beach, surfing, warm sand and tropical summer evenings. Here I worked first for a restaurant company and then was recruited to be the manager of the Los Angeles Playboy Club. I will keep the details of that job to myself f...Expand for more
or now. The club was closed in the late 1980's and I went to work for the Disney Corporation producing events at the Disneyland Resort and at the movie studio. Movie premiers, wrap parties, award shows and special events. I was involved with several motion pictures and a host of television shows. By this time I had a few houses in Orange County and two really cool kids.
I eventually made it back to Oregon, creating an Events company in Portland. The kids were not too sure about coming up but they made the switch OK. Setting up shop in Portland I was involved with several events associated with the Portland Arts Museum, Performing Arts Center and the Zoo. Portland is a great town and it was good to be back in a town with trees, beautiful scenery and clean air.
It has been a wonderful adventure since coming back to Oregon. I managed the Wolf Creek Inn for the Oregon State Parks Department, bought and operated a Bed and Breakfast in Eugene and am now a partner in a new restaurant venture, Café Yumm! We offer healthy and organic menu items in a quick casual setting. I am involved with a Dragon Boat Racing organization based in Portland where I manage 43 teams and produce a race each September.
The kids are on their own now. Molly is 21 and Sterling is 25. Hard to explain as I am only 34!
